Goucher Nips Men's Basketball in Final Seconds

Box Score

TOWSON, Md. – Keon Butler converted the game-winning layup with 6.2 seconds remaining as Goucher College edged Stevenson University 65-64 in non-conference men's basketball Saturday afternoon at the Decker Sports & Recreation Center.

Stevenson (1-8) led for much of the second half and held a 62-56 lead with 3:45 left on a pair of free throws by junior Tim McNeal.  Goucher (3-7) scored the next five points, with a basket by Chris Outing and an Elliott Wiley three making it 62-61 with 2:52 left.  On the other end, freshman Mark Terrell made it 64-61 at the 2:36 mark.

Goucher made it 64-63 with 1:23 to go on a basket by Butler.  Stevenson came up empty on its next trip, and the Gophers took over with 55 seconds left.  With the shot clock winding down, Stevenson was whistled for a foul on the floor, giving the hosts the chance to take the final shot.

Following two Goucher timeouts, Dwayne Morton found Butler underneath for a layup with 6.2 seconds left to give the Gophers their first lead since early in the second half.  The Mustangs elected not to call timeout and missed a running three-pointer as time expired.

Stevenson led 33-28 at halftime and 36-28 early in the second half following a three-pointer by freshman Kyle Wooldridge before Goucher used a 10-0 run to take a 38-36 lead with 14:46 left.  The Mustangs scored the next eight points, and a basket by junior Christian Collins at the 11:44 mark put the guests on top 44-38.  The Gophers countered with a 7-2 spurt to pull within one, 46-45, with 10:21 to go.  Stevenson used a 10-4 run and a conventional three-point play by Terrell put the Mustangs up 56-49 with 7:20 left.

Goucher led 12-8 just over seven minutes into the game when the Mustangs embarked on an 11-0 run capped by a Wooldridge three at the 8:56 mark to take a 19-12 lead.  Stevenson held the Gophers without a field goal for over seven minutes as it extended the lead to 23-14 on a layup by freshman Cameron Hayes at the 6:11 mark.  Goucher pulled within two, 28-26, with 1:45 left before halftime, but a Wooldridge three in the final seconds of the first half gave the guests a 33-28 lead, Stevenson's first of the season at halftime.

Stevenson shot 40.7% for the game while limiting the Gophers to 37.9% shooting and held a 41-30 rebounding advantage, but Goucher went 6-16 from three compared to the Mustangs' 4-17 effort, and made three more free throws, going 15-17 while the guests were 12-17.  The Mustangs also had a season-high 12 steals.

McNeal led the Mustangs with 15 points after missing the last two games, going 6-11 from the floor.  Wooldridge and Terrell each totaled 13 points, with the mark being a career high for Wooldridge while matching Terrell's career high.  Wooldridge knocked down three three-pointers, while Terrell was 5-10 from the floor.  Hayes added seven points.

Wiley and Chris Outing each finished with 16 points to pace Goucher.

Stevenson returns to action Tuesday night at 5:00 when it travels to York (Pa.) College for a non-conference contest.
