Box Score REISTERSTOWN, Md. - Stevenson men's ice hockey freshman Colin Woods scored his first career goal but the Mustangs could not erase a two-goal deficit as fifth-ranked Hobart posted a 3-1 ECAC West Hockey victory Saturday evening at Reisterstown Sportsplex.
The loss was the first for the Mustangs (3-1, 1-1 ECAC) in their inaugural season after opening the year with three consecutive victories. The team was also held to just one goal after averaging over five goals a game through the opening three.
Mitch Beyer put the Statesmen (3-0-1, 2-0 ECAC) on the board just over seven minutes into the contest. Just 3:26 later, Hobart doubled its lead as Zach Sternbach scored on a power play goal with 20 seconds remaining in the Stevenson penalty.
Following the fourth penalty for the Mustangs in the opening period, Woods was able to beat the Statemen defender on a breakaway and beat goalkeeper Alexander Connal for the shorthanded goal and get the hosts back within one.
Neither team scored in the second period that saw Stevenson hold a slight 10-9 edge in shots.
Statistically, the third period belong to the Statesmen as the visitors outshot the Mustangs, 18-7 but the hosts created scoring chances. With just over four minutes remaining in regulation, junior Mike Davis hit under the crossbar but the puck bounced out.
With Hobart on a 5-on-3 power play late in the period, Statesmen leading scorer Bobby Sokol gave the visitors an insurance goal with his fourth of the year. Hobart finished 2-for-8 on the power play while the Mustangs were 0-for-4.
Junior Jacob Caffrey finished with 34 saves in the contest.
Stevenson hits the road for the first time this season when the Mustangs travel to Nazareth on Saturday, November 12 for an ECAC West contest beginning at 4:00 p.m.
