Box Score BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Stevenson men's ice hockey team scored four goals in the third period to erase a 2-0 deficit as the Mustangs snapped their four-game skid with a 4-3 victory over Buffalo State Saturday afternoon at the Buffalo State Ice Rink.
It was the second two-goal deficit the Mustangs (5-5) have overcome this season with the first coming versus Morrisville State in the opening weekend. The four goals also matches the team's goal total over the previous four games where they were outscored, 19-4.
For the fifth straight game, Stevenson allowed a first period goal as the Bengals (5-2-1) scored twice. Robert Smits scored with 17 seconds remaining in Buffalo State's first power play opportunity before Zach Nieminen scored a shorthanded goal with one second remaining in the period.
It is the third shorthanded goal the Mustangs have allowed in the last five games while allowing a power play goal in seven straight.
Following a scoreless second period, Stevenson got on the board just 1:42 into the third period as freshman Nick Bohatiuk scored on an assist from classmate Colin Woods. Just 1:57 later, Bohatiuk recorded his third multi-goal game.
Freshman Alfred Panelin-Borg and junior Jordan Watt were credited with the assists.
The Mustangs took the lead at the 7:06 mark as freshman Jack Raleigh scored his first career goal on assists from junior Doug Rose and freshman Dominic Brenza.
Just 45 seconds later, the Bengals, who are receiving votes in the latest USCHO.com Top 15 Poll and are ranked at No. 15 in the D3Hockey.com Poll, knotted the game at 3-3 as Taylor Pryce scored a power play goal just 19 seconds into the player advantage.
At the 11:38 mark, Watt scored his second game-winning goal of the year after finishing on assists from freshman Mitch Dolman and Evan Williams. It is the first career point for Dolman.
For the third consecutive game, the Mustangs were held scoreless on the power play as they finished 0-for-3. The team is just 2-for-21 over the last five games while going 21-for-30 on the penalty during that stretch.
Junior Jacob Caffrey finished with 42 saves, marking the second time this season he has surpassed 40 in a game.
The Mustangs were outshot 45-29, including 20-7 in the opening period.
Stevenson takes the ice for the last time in 2016 on Friday, December 2 when the Mustangs travel to Lebanon Valley for an ECAC West contest beginning at 7:00 p.m.
