Box Score ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Highlighted by eight different goal scorers and 45 saves by junior Jacob Caffrey, the Stevenson men's ice hockey team posted a 4-3 ECAC West victory over Nazareth Saturday afternoon at Bill Gray's Regional Iceplex.
It was the fourth time in five games to open the season the Mustangs (4-1, 2-1 ECAC West) have totaled at least four goals while also improving to 2-0 in one-goal games. It was also the first road game in program history after starting the season with four home games.
After a scoreless opening period where Nazareth outshot Stevenson, 15-3, the visitors were the first to get on the board as junior Jordan Watt scored his third of the year after knocking in a rebound at the 9:38 mark of the second period. Freshman Dominic Brenza picked up an assist.
Just under four minutes later, junior Doug Rose scored his first goal of the season on the power play after a blast from the point. Rose has tallied a point in four of five games this season after scoring off assist by junior Mike Davis and freshman Austin Swingle.
The Golden Flyers (2-2-1, 2-1 ECAC West) finally got on the board on their 32nd shot as Austin Romek scored off a rebound attempt that was initially saved by Caffrey.
Brenza recorded his first multi-point game with a power play tally just over midway through the third period to put the visitors back up two. But Nazareth answered right back just 56 seconds later.
Freshman Christian Ripley scored for the third time in the last four games with a power play strike at the 16:37 mark off assists from classmate Nick Bohatiuk and Davis. It is the third multi-point game for Davis this season.
A power play goal by Ryan Walter with just over 19 seconds remaining got the hosts back within one and following a timeout the Flyers pulled goalkeeper Brandon Lane for an extra skater. Following an offside call, Nazareth won the face off and got a shot off but Caffrey was there for the pad save to seal the victory.
The Mustangs were outshot, 48-24 and finished 3-for-5 on the power play and 5-for-6 on the penalty kill.
Stevenson returns to action on Sunday, November 13 when the Mustangs face ninth-ranked Utica in a ECAC West contest. Opening puck drop is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
