Box Score 2 OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The Stevenson University men's volleyball team defeated No. 10 Elmira College 3-0 Saturday afternoon at Owings Mills Gymnasium to cap off a two win day. Earlier in the day, the Mustangs downed Medaille 3-0 in their home opener.
The set scores against Medaille were 25-22, 25-21, 25-16, while the Mustangs topped the Soaring Eagles by scores of 25-13, 25-22, 25-14.
The Mustangs (3-2) are now 6-3 in season openers since 2008 and have posted a 26-8 record at home over the past four seasons with six of those losses coming to teams ranked in the AVCA Division III Coaches Top 15 Poll.
Stevenson's win against the 10th-ranked Soaring Eagles (5-1) marks its first win against a ranked opponent since topping No. 9 Rivier last February. The Mustangs received votes in this week's AVCA Division III poll.
Freshman Landon Shorts and junior Michael Fehrs each totaled nine kills in the opening victory versus the Mavericks (1-2) as the duo recorded 48.6 percent of the teams kills. The two also combined for 10 digs.
Rookie Owen Terroso finished with a team-high 10 digs as he has totaled at least 10 digs in two matches this season. Classmate Jason Gardner totaled seven digs for the third straight match while also adding three digs and three block assists.
Senior Rob Wingert recorded 33 assists and four digs.
For the first time in four matches to begin the season, the Mutstangs totaled zero service aces but finished with a season low nine service errors.
In the win against Elmira, Gardner finished with nine kills and four blocks on .583 hitting, while Shorts finished with seven kills. Senior Kyle Pottieger had eight blocks, including four solo stops, to go along with four kills, while Wingert handed out 24 assists in the three-set victory.
Stevenson hit .319 as a team in the nightcap, including .632 in the opening set as the hosts had 12 kills against zero errors on 19 attempts. The Mustangs held Elmira to negative hitting in two of three sets and a -.053 hitting percentage for the contest as Stevenson racked up 14 blocks.
Stevenson opens Continental Volleyball Conference action on Friday, February 5 when the Mustangs host Cairn beginning at 7:00 p.m.
