Box Score 1 UNION, N.J. - Stevenson men's volleyball senior Rob Wingert totaled a career-high 40 assists while freshman Landon Shorts recorded a combined 34 kills as the Mustangs fell to Hunter and No. 11 Kean Friday afternoon in the Kean Classic at Harwood Arena.
The Mustangs (1-2) fell to Hunter, 19-25, 24-26,19-25, 25-13, 10-15 before falling 25-17, 23-25, 19-25, 23-25 versus host Kean. The team is 0-7 against ranked teams since the start of last season.
Stevenson totaled 62 kills and a .262 hitting percentage compared to 48 kills and a .146 hitting percentage for the Hawks (2-1) in the opening match, but the Mustangs totaled 22 service errors, including five in the decisive fifth set.
In the two sets won by the Mustangs, the team recorded a .509 attack percentage with just three errors but in the three sets dropped, Stevenson registered a .125 attack percentage and committed 20 errors.
Trailing two sets to one, the trio of Shorts, senior Kyle Pottieger and junior Michael Fehrs combined for 12 kills while the team hit .542 to force a fifth set. But despite totaling four more kills than Hunter in the final set, the Mustangs could not close out the match as the Hawks totaled 10 of their 15 points, including four of the final five, on Stevenson errors.
Shorts totaled 16 kills and 10 digs while junior Nate Ellis finished with 10 kills, five total blocks, three digs and three service aces. Freshman Owen Terroso recorded a team-high 13 digs.
In game two versus the Cougars (2-1), Shorts totaled a team-high 18 kills while Fehrs added 10. In addition to 40 assists, Wingert also added 10 digs.
For the third straight game, the Mustangs recorded more kills and a higher hitting percentage than their opponent but the team totaled 17 service errors while Kean finished with 23 total blocks, including three solo.
Stevenson returns to action on Saturday, January 30 when the Mustangs host a four-team tournament. The team opens with Medaille at 12:00 p.m.
