Box Score SALISBURY, Md. - Stevenson field hockey junior Gabriella Brooks totaled a career-high 22 saves, but it wasn't enough as the Mustangs fell to No. 2 Salisbury, 5-0, in the season opener for both teams Tuesday evening at Sea Gulls Stadium.
The Mustangs (0-1), who are winless in 11 all-time meetings versus their former Capital Athletic Conference rival, totaled only five shots on goal compared to 31 for the Sea Gulls.
After Brooks stopped the first six shots by Salisbury (1-0), Cassie Preisch put the hosts on the board after converting a penalty stroke. The Sea Gulls would double their lead ten minutes before the half after scoring on a scramble in front of the goal.
Stevenson nearly cut the deficit back to one as sophomore Judi Neff totaled two of the Mustangs three first half shots on goal. However, Tressie Windsor came up with two of her five saves.
The Sea Gulls scored 1:40 into the second half on Jantzen's second goal of the game, increasing the lead to 3-0. The Mustangs looked for a quick response but Windsor was able to stop a shot by junior Rosemarie Neiva. It was just one of two second half shots for Stevenson.
Sam Johnson had a hand in the final two goals for Salisbury as she was one of three Sea Gulls to finish with a multi-point game.
Brooks' 22 saves ranks tied for ninth in school history.
The Mustangs return to action on Saturday, September 5 when they travel to face Lynchburg beginning at 11:00 a.m.
