Box Score ANNVILLE, Pa. - Junior Kaitlyn Seger went 3-for-3 with an RBI but the Stevenson softball team could not overcome a late 4-2 deficit as the third-seeded Mustangs fell to top-seeded Messiah in the Commonwealth Conference Tournament Saturday afternoon at LVC Softball Field.
With the loss, the Mustangs (19-21) were eliminated in a double elimination tournament, ending their 2015 season. The team advanced to their second conference tournament in three seasons in the league.
After junior Kristen Mueller was hit by a pitch to start the game and classmate Tiffany Kahl reached on a bunt, the duo pulled off a double steal to get both runners in scoring position. Seger came through with a single through the left side before Kahl scored on a groundout.
The Falcons (31-8) would respond with two runs of their own in the bottom of the first inning as Carrie Fix scored on a wild pitch before Amber Bingaman tied the game on an infield single scoring the runner from third.
Stevenson would total just one hit over the next four innings while holding Messiah to just four. With one out and runners on second and third, the Falcons would score the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly before adding another run on a throwing error on the same play.
The Mustangs were able to load the bases with two outs in the top of the sixth inning but could not score as Claressa Mees totaled one of her two strikeouts.
In the seventh inning, Stevenson was able to load the bases once again, this time with just one out but the Falcons were able to get two outs on a fly ball. Kahl flied out to left field before the left fielder relayed the throw to second base after the runners tagged to record the third and final out.
The game marks the end of the careers for seniors Stephanie Ayres, Abbey DeFeo, Courtney Cook and Briana Pichalski. Together they led the Mustangs to their conference tournaments, including the programs first conference championship game in 2013 when they set a school record 24 wins.
