Box Score 2 ANNVILLE, Pa. - Junior Kristen Mueller totaled three extra-base hits while junior Molly Hoyt picked up a win in the pitching circle as the third-seeded Stevenson softball team split its opening two games in the Commonwealth Conference tournament Friday afternoon at LVC Softball Field.
The Mustangs (19-20) dropped its opening round game versus second-seeded Widener, 4-0, before advancing to day two of a double elimination tournament with a 6-1 victory against fifth-seeded Alvernia.
In the opening game against the Pride (24-7), Stevenson totaled just three hits as Widener scored a run in four different innings. Junior Kaitlyn Seger totaled two of the Mustangs hits as senior Courtney Cook was 1-for-2.
The Pride totaled just one extra-base hit in the game but reached base 12 times, including 10 hits. The trio of Ally Hovarth, Carissa Harris and Angela Hood all finished 2-for-3.
The Mustangs took a 2-0 lead in the second inning of game two on a two-RBI triple by Mueller. The junior, who totaled two triples in the game, holds the school record with 10 in her three-year career.
A run by Alvernia (18-17-1) in the top of the fourth-inning cut the lead to just one but Stevenson responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning as Seger drew a bases loaded walk before Hoyt singled to center field. Junior Emily Soller also recorded an RBI as she reached on a fielders choice.
Stevenson would add one more run in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly as the Mustangs posted a five-run win for the seventh time this season. It was also the 15th time the team has totaled at least 10 hits.
Mueller finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs for her fourth three-hit game of the season. Meanwhile, Hoyt was 2-for-4 with an RBI at the plate while scattering four hits in 6.0 innings for her third win of the season.
The Mustangs will face top-ranked Messiah on day two of the Commonwealth Conference tournament at LVC Softball Field beginning at 1:00 p.m. Follow the live stats, here and live video, here.
