Soller Ties Division III Record in Doubleheader Sweep Against Alvernia

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson softball junior Emily Soller tied an 18-year record with two grand slams in an inning as the Mustangs totaled six home runs en route to a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader sweep, 12-3 and 16-6, Thursday afternoon at Weinberg-Fine Stadium.

The Mustangs (10-11, 7-3 MAC), who entered the day with just four home runs, totaled a combined 25 hits, including a season-best 14 in game two. With the wins, Stevenson moves into second place in the conference with three doubleheaders remaining.

The team also totaled three home runs in each game, the first time Stevenson has hit three home runs in a game since April 1, 2011. The Mustangs also have totaled 10 home runs this season, the most since 2011 when they hit 16.

After Stevenson got out of a bases loaded jam to start the game, junior Kristen Mueller hit her first home run of the season, a two-RBI blast to center field. Stevenson would add two unearned runs in the inning as the Crusaders (9-9, 3-5 MAC) finished the game with five errors.

The Mustangs added four more runs in the second inning, including a two-run single by junior Laura Welch who extended her hitting streak to four games.

Facing the conference leaders in home runs, Stevenson totaled two in the fourth inning as freshman Kate Finnen hit her first career homer down the left field line before sophomore Naomi Fields hit a three-run home run to left field.

Alvernia would total three runs on four hits in the fifth inning before freshman Brooke Steinbach came in to record the final two outs. Classmate Jasmyn Ogletree posted her team-leading sixth win of the season, a mark that ranks third in the conference.

Fields finished 2-for-3 with a run and a career-high four RBIs while Mueller was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs. Freshman Alli Culp totaled her first career hit in four at bats as a pinch hitter in the fourth inning.

The Crusaders scored three runs in the first inning of game two, including a lead-off home run by Brianna DePriest. DePriest, who totaled two home runs in the game, leads the conference with seven.

However, the Mustangs exploded for 13 runs in the bottom of the inning including two grand slams by Soller and a two-run homer by junior Tiffany Kahl. Stevenson totaled eight hits in the inning while Alvernia committed three errors.

Soller became just the second player in Division III history to total two grand slams in one inning and is the first since 1997. She also becomes just the sixth player and first since 2013 to total two grand slams in a game. Entering this season, just a total of seven players in all three divisions have ever hit two grand slams in an inning.

After a solo home run by DePriest in the second inning, Stevenson totaled three more runs in the third on an RBI-single by freshman Sabrina Gordon followed by a two-run double by Mueller.

Soller finished 3-for-3 with eight RBIs and three runs while Mueller and Kahl each added two RBIs. Meanwhile, junior Kaitlyn Seger went 2-for-2 with two runs, extending her hitting streak to five for her second five-game hitting streak of the season.

Steinbach earned her second win of the season after allowing one earned run on five hits. She also tied her season-best with four strikeouts.

Stevenson returns to action on Wednesday, April 15 when the Mustangs travel to Eastern for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m.
