Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Senior Kathryn Merrick totaled seven points on four goals and three assists as the Stevenson women's lacrosse team posted a 20-5 Commonwealth Conference victory over Widener Saturday afternoon at Mustang Stadium on Senior Day.
The Mustangs (10-6, 6-1 MAC) scored at least 20 goals for the third time this season and second-straight. It is also the 11th time in the last five seasons the team has posted at least 20 goals, five of those coming in Commonwealth Conference contests.
After winning the opening draw control, sophomore Olivia Monteiro scored just 24 seconds into the game. It is the second-straight game Stevenson scored in the opening 30 seconds of the game.
The Mustangs raced out to a 8-0 lead in the first 10 minutes as Monteiro scored a hat trick in the opening 7:33. Merrick and senior Amanda LeGar teamed up for two goals while classmate Meg Gill scored her first goal this season and second of her career on a free-position shot.
Stevenson scored the first 10 goals of the game before the Pride (6-9, 3-5 MAC) scored at the 10:08 mark for one of their two first half tallies. It was the fourth time this season the Mustangs have held their opponent to two goals or less in the first half.
Sophomore Brady Heher would score twice in the opening half, scoring her second goal outside of the 18-meter arc after checking the ball out of the goalie's stick near the restraining line. Heher would finish with three goals for the second-straight game and fourth time this season.
Senior Leanne Bittner turned away the first five shots, including two on free-position attempts, by Widener while the Mustangs defense forced seven caused turnovers and held the Pride to just 3-for-9 on clear opportunities in the opening 30 minutes.
Merrick opened the second half with her second goal of the game just 23 seconds in. She would have a piece in the first three Mustang goals of the second half as she tallied another goal just 3:26 later before dishing out an assist. Merrick, who added six draw controls, has totaled 15 points in the last two games on 10 goals and five assists.
A total of nine players scored a goal including just the third goal by freshman Molly Gonzalez who was assisted by Gill. It was the first multi-point game for Gill who entered the day with just one career goal. She also added three draw controls, three ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Senior Taylor Wright totaled a ground ball, a draw control and a caused turnover while LeGar finished with two goals, an assist and one ground ball. Meanwhile, senior Chelsea Cavey made her first appearance of the season after battling with injuries.
Monteiro finished with six points on five goals and an assist while adding five draw controls, four ground balls and three caused turnovers.
The Mustangs held a significant edge in nearly every statistical category including a 38-15 advantage in shots and a 17-10 advantage in draw controls.
Stevenson returns to action on Wednesday, April 29 when the second-seeded Mustangs host third-seeded Lebanon Valley in the Commonwealth Conference semifinals. Opening draw is at 4:00 p.m.
