CHESTER, Pa. - The Stevenson softball team totaled five errors leading to six unearned runs as the Mustangs fell to second-place Widener in a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader Thursday afternoon.
The Mustangs (6-11, 3-3 MAC), who dropped their fifth-straight contest, have totaled 13 errors in the last six games after totaling just three in the previous six. During that time, 59.3 percent of runs scored by Stevenson's opponents have been unearned.
Junior Kristen Mueller scored an unearned run in the first inning to give Stevenson an early one-run lead but the Pride (12-2, 5-1 MAC) scored five runs throughout the second and third innings to give the hosts a 5-1 advantage.
After singles by senior Courtney Cook and freshman Brooke Steinbach and a walk by Mueller, the Mustangs would score three unearned runs on two throwing errors after junior Tiffany Kahl reached on a fielder's choice to make it a one-run game in the top of the seventh.
But Alexis Schengrund forced the next two batters to fly out as she allowed no earned runs on five hits. Cook finished 2-for-2 while freshman Kate Finnen tallied Stevenson's lone RBI.
In game two, the Mustangs took a 3-1 lead in the fifth inning before Widener scored five runs in the bottom of the inning, highlighted by a grand slam Ally Horvath. Horvath was 2-for-3 with five RBIs and one run.
Freshman Jasmyn Ogletree and Sabrina Gordon and junior Kaitlyn Seger all totaled RBIs while Ogletree and Seger combined to go 4-for-6. It was the fourth multi-hit game for Ogletree while Seger has totaled a hit in 11 of 16 games.
The Mustangs finished with a season-high four errors leading to six unearned runs.
Stevenson returns on action on Saturday, April 4 when the Mustangs travel to Albright for a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
