Mustangs Clinch Playoff Berth Despite Falling to First-Place Messiah

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Senior Courtney Cook hit her first home run of the season but Messiah hit a total of four as the Stevenson softball team dropped a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader versus first-place Messiah Saturday afternoon at Weinberg-Fine Stadium.

Despite the loss, the Mustangs (13-14, 9-5 MAC) clinched a spot in the 2015 Commonwealth Conference Tournament. Stevenson is currently the third seed, three games ahead of fourth-place Alvernia.

With two outs in the first inning, Stevenson put two base runners on with two outs but were unable to convert as the Mustangs finished 0-for-3 with runners in scoring position during the game.

After the Falcons (26-7, 12-0 MAC) loaded the bases in the second inning, Stevenson was able to get two outs before Emily Quatrale hit a bases clearing double to right center field. Messiah tacked on its fourth run in the fourth inning on a double down the left field line.

The Mustangs defense, led by senior Stephanie Ayres and junior Kristen Mueller, held strong over the final three innings holding the Falcons to no hits. Messiah was held to a season-low four hits.

Freshman Jasmyn Ogletree suffered her first loss in her last five starts, allowing one earned run. Meanwhile, junior Kaitlyn Seger led the team with two hits and has totaled a hit in nine of the last 11 games.

Messiah used the long ball and tough defense in game two to remain unbeaten in the conference. The Falcons hit four home runs, including two by Amanda Jones.

Cook provided most of the Mustangs offense, finishing 2-for-2 with a home run and a double. Cook also battled to draw a walk in the seventh inning to keep the inning alive.

Courtney Allen, who hit a two-run homer, improved her record to 6-0 in the pitching circle scattering five hits to go along with six strikeouts.

Stevenson continues with its second of three-straight home doubleheaders on Tuesday, April 21 when the Mustangs host a non-conference doubleheader versus Frostburg State beginning at 3:30 p.m.
