FREDERICK, Md. - Stevenson softball junior Kaitlyn Seger went a combined 6-for-8 with five RBIs, a double and a home run as the Mustangs posted their fourth Commonwealth Conference doubleheader sweep, 4-1 and 12-8, over Hood Friday afternoon.
The Mustangs (13-12, 9-3 MAC), who have won seven of their last eight, are one win from clinching a spot in this year's Commonwealth Conference tournament for the second time in three year's in the league. The team advanced to their first-ever conference championship game in 2013.
Freshman Jasmyn Ogletree allowed just one hit and struck-out six as Stevenson's offense totaled 15 hits, including a game-high three by Ogletree. The rookie also picked up her team-leading eighth win of the year in the pitching circle.
Stevenson totaled two runs in each of the second and third innings while the Blazers () didn't pick up their first hit until the fourth inning. Freshman Brooke Steinbach picked up her third save of the season, scattering one hit over the final 1.1 innings.
The Mustangs exploded for a season-high 17 hits in game two, their most since totaled 21 on May 4, 2013 also against Hood.
Highlighted by a three-run home run by junior Molly Hoyt and a three-run homer by Seger, Stevenson built a 6-0 lead in the second inning. It is the third long ball for Hoyt and second for Seger, both coming this year.
Seger scored two more runs in the fourth inning on a double down the left field line to extend Stevenson's lead to 8-4. The junior finished the game 4-for-5 with a career-high five RBIs.
The Blazers cut the lead in half on one swing as Kayli Paugh hit a grand slam in the bottom of the fourth inning. Hood would then total three home runs in the fifth inning to tie the game at 8-8.
But the Mustangs would score the games final four runs as the duo of Steinbach and Ogletree held the Blazers without a hit over the final two innings.
Hoyt and junior Kristen Mueller combined to go 6-for-9. Hoyt added four RBIs and two runs while Mueller scored the go-ahead run.
Seger, who has two separate six-game hitting streaks this year, has totaled a hit in 18 of the 24 games she has appeared in this season. Seger currently ranks fourth in the conference with a .439 average.
Stevenson returns to action on Saturday, April 18 when the Mustangs host a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader versus Messiah. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
