Wisner, Moler Lead Mustangs in Loss to Rutgers-Newark in CVC Championship

NEWARK, N.J. - Stevenson men's volleyball seniors Kyle Wisner and David Moler were both named to the 2015 Continental Volleyball Conference Championship All-Tournament Team, but Rutgers-Newark improved to 3-0 against the Mustangs this season with a 25-21, 25-19, 25-23 victory Saturday in the CVC title match.

Stevenson (17-14), who finishes the season in the conference championship for the second-straight season, will now await to see if it is selected to the ECAC championship.

For Rutgers-Newark (21-8), captures the CVC title in its first season in the league and receives the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Men's Volleyball Championship.

Wisner was named to the all-tournament team after totaling 17 kills in two matches with a .286 hitting percentage, seven service aces and eight total blocks. Moler had 70 assists, six digs and four block assists.

On Saturday, junior Patrick Schuyler led the Mustangs with 12 kills and a .407 hitting percentage. He finished the two-day tournament with 21 kills and a .320 hitting percentage.

In the first set, the Scarlet Raiders jumped out to a 6-2 lead before Stevenson rallied to tie the set at 11-11. The Mustangs then took their first lead at 16-14 after an attack error by Alex Barnhard and a triple block from Schuyler, junior Kyle Pottieger and sophomore Nate Ellis on Cory Chidsey.

The CVC's leader in hitting percentage at .441, Stevenson limited Chidsey to just three kills and a minus-.111 percentage.

However, led by three kills from Travis Mintzer and four Mustang errors, Rutgers-Newark closed the set on an 11-5 run to pull out the four-point victory.

After nine ties to open the second set, Stevenson took a 15-10 lead behind two service aces from Wisner and two block assists each from Schuyler and Ellis.

Trailing 17-14, the Scarlet Raiders scored 11 of the final 13 points to steal the second set and take a 2-0 lead. Jake Fredericks had five kills during the run while Nick Kuti had two block assists.

Facing elimination, the Mustangs opened the third set with a 7-1 run with two kills from Schuyler and a kill and service ace from Wisner, but Rutgers-Newark chipped away until the tied the set at 16-16. The hosts then took a 22-18 advantage before three-straight points pulled Stevenson within one.

The two teams would alternate the next four points until the Scarlet Raiders sealed the championship on Mintzer's 12th kills of the match.

Fredericks finished with 16 kills to join Mintzer on the all-tournament team. Kevin McCandless earned Most Valuable Player honors after totaling 40 assists, 11 digs and three block assists.

Ellis had eight kills and four block assists while Pottieger had four kills and a team-high eight digs.

The selection show for the 2015 NCAA Division III Men's Volleyball Championship will be on Tuesday, April 14 at 10:00 a.m., live on NCAA.com. The selections for the ECAC will come out later that afternoon.
