Mustangs Sweep Marymount (Va.) to Advance to Second-Straight CVC Title Match

NEWARK, N.J. - Stevenson men's volleyball senior Kyle Wisner and junior Patrick Schuyler each had nine kills as the Mustangs used a balanced attack to post a 25-22, 25-20, 25-17 victory over Marymount (Va.) in the semifinals of the Continental Volleyball Championship Friday evening at Rutgers-Newark's Golden Dome Arena.

Stevenson (17-13), who swept two of the three meetings with the Saints this season, improved to 5-4 in neutral site contests this season and 4-3 in four CVC tournament appearances.

Wisner and Schuyler led five players who had at least five kills as the Mustangs posted a .309 hitting percentage. Sophomore Michael Fehrs had seven kills while sophomore Nate Ellis added five.

Marymount (14-20) jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the opening set and pushed its lead to 12-5 before the Mustangs used a 12-1 run to take a 17-13 advantage. During the run, Wisner had three kills and Fehrs added two while the Saints had six attack errors.

Stevenson led by as many as five at 21-16 before holding off a late Marymount rally to take a 1-0 lead.

The second set featured eight ties, the last of which came at 19-19 before the Mustangs scored six of the final seven points for the five-point victory. Ellis had a kill and two block assists during the run while the Saints committed three more errors.

Stevenson had 12 kills in the second set while making just one error in 29 attempts for a .389 hitting percentage.

The Mustangs jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the third set and never trailed while leading by as many as nine at 20-11 before sealing their 12th sweep of the year. The team is 12-3 in three-set matches this season.

Wisner added four total blocks and three service aces while Schuyler contributing three block assists. Fehrs had six digs and Ellis totaled four block assists. Senior All-CVC selection David Moler had 34 assists and four digs while junior Kyle Pottieger had three kills and nine digs. Senior Scott Morantz totaled a team-high 10 digs.

Graham Clark had 10 kills to lead Marymount while Tj Wiechecki had nine kills and four digs.

Stevenson will face top-seeded Rutgers-Newark in the championship match on Saturday after the Scarlet Raiders swept Thiel in Friday's other semifinal. The Mustangs are 0-2 against Rutgers-Newark this season, but did battle the team to five sets on March 6.
