Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson men's lacrosse junior Matt Tompkins totaled five goals and one assist while junior Pat Candon added two goals and four assists to lead the eighth-ranked Mustangs to a 16-6 non-conference victory over York (Pa.) Friday night at Mustang Stadium.
Stevenson (8-4), who has now won four of their last five at home, jumped out to a 4-0 lead after one before extending its lead to 12-1 with 8:18 remaining in the third quarter.
Tompkins scored four of the Mustang's first seven goals, connecting twice with Candon who had a hand in five of the first 12 tallies, totaling one goal and four assists. The two connected three times in the game while accounting for nine of the team's 16 goals.
Like Candon, senior Tony Rossi also finished with four assists with all four coming in the game's first 20 minutes as Stevenson built a 7-1 lead with 10:01 left in the second quarter.
All 16 of the Mustangs' goals were assisted as nine different players had at least one helper. A total of 13 players had at least one point, incuding freshman Lito Flanagan who had the first of his career on a goal by junior Stephen Banick with 4:40 to play in the third quarter.
With a second-quarter tally, senior Billy Burgoyne became the seventh player in school history to score 100 for his career as he found the back of the net with 1:33 remaining off a feed from Candon.
Stevenson scored 16 goals on 40 shots for a 40.0 percent success rate, including 10 on just 20 shots in the opening half. The team outshot the Spartans by eight and were 3-of-5 on extra-man opportunities.
Senior Callum Robinson, junior Chad Williams and freshman Dom DeFazio each had three caused turnovers as the Mustangs totaled 15 to go along with 39 ground balls. Junior Connor Skeen won his second start in goal, making seven saves, including four in the fourth quarter.
Andrew Gamble, Tyler Hutson and Dillon Hannah each had three points for York (8-6) while Caleb Abney made 11 saves.
Stevenson returns to action in less than 24 hours when it travels to Arcadia on Saturday for a 1:00 p.m., Commonwealth Conference contest with the Knights.
