Schuyler Leads Mustangs to Back-to-Back Sweeps Over Marymount, Ramapo

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson men's volleyball junior Patrick Schuyler totaled 23 kills while junior Kyle Pottieger added 17 kills and 11 digs as the Mustangs defeated Marymount (Va.) 25-14, 25-23, 25-22 before sweeping Ramapo 25-22, 25-18, 26-24 in a tri-match Wednesday at Owings Mills Gymnasium.

With the win over Marymount, Stevenson (11-8, 4-1 CVC) moved into a tie for second-place in the Continental Volleyball Conference standings with Rutgers-Newark. The two teams meet on Friday at 7:00 p.m., inside Owings Mills Gymnasium.

The reigning CVC player of the week, Schuyler totaled 13 kills against the Saints, including six in the second set and five in the third. Pottieger added nine kills to go along with nine digs and two service aces.

The first set featured five ties and three lead changes, the last of which came at 8-8. The Mustangs scored 17 of the final 23 points, including six-straight behind the serve of senior David Moler en route to the nine-point victory.

Despite nine ties, Stevenson never trailed in the second set. Schuyler and Pottieger totaled six kills each, combining for 12 of the Mustangs' 17 kills while Moler had 17 assists.

Marymount (6-11, 2-5 CVC) jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the deciding third set and held the lead until Stevenson tied it at 21-21. Led by five points behind the serve of Pottieger, the Mustangs rallied to score seven of the final eight points.

Freshman Alex Klunk totaled four kills and four blocks while senior Kyle Wisner added six kills.

Against former North East Collegiate Volleyball Association rival Ramapo, Stevenson got 10 kills from Schuyler, nine from Wisner and eight from Pottieger. Sophomore Kyle Johnson totaled 12 digs while Klunk had five kills and three block assists.

The Roadrunners (8-10) took a 6-2 lead in the opening set before the Mustangs scored eight consecutive points behind the serve of Moler to take a 21-18 advantage. Pottieger led the way with five kills.

Trailing 4-3 in the second set, Stevenson used a 13-4 run to double up the visitors, 16-8. The Mustangs never let the lead slip below seven the rest of the way. Klunk, Wisner and Schuyler combined nine of the team's 11 kills.

Stevenson tled by as many as seven in the third set at 12-5 before Ramapo rallied to tie the set at 22-22. The Roadrunners held set point at 24-23, but a Ramapo service error and attack error followed by a kill from Wisner gave the Mustangs their third-straight 3-0 victory and ninth this season.
