Box Score

LANGHORNE, Pa. - Stevenson men's volleyball sophomore Nate Ellis had 15 kills and seven total blocks while junior Patrick Schuyler totaled 12 kills and 13 digs, but the Mustangs fell to Cairn Saturday at the Mason Activity Center, 16-25, 31-29, 18-25, 25-22, 15-11.

The loss was the first in the series for Stevenson (15-12, 6-3 CVC) since Mar. 11, 2011, snapping an eight-game win streak.

The Mustangs had won 11 of their last 16 entering last night's match at Rutgers-Newark, but have now lost two-straight. Today's defeat also marks the first time since Mar. 3, 2012 that the team has lost back-to-back conference contests.

Meanwhile, the Highlanders (11-16, 1-11 CVC) snapped a 13-game conference losing streak, posting their first CVC victory since a 3-1 win over Eastern Mennonite at home on Mar. 29, 2014.

After a nine-point victory in the first set, Stevenson rallied from a 14-9 deficit in the second to tie set at 19-19. Cairn had its first set point at 24-22, but back-to-back kills by Ellis and freshman Alex Klunk tied the set at 24-24.

The Mustangs then had set point four times, the last at 29-28, before the Highlanders scored the final three on kills by Josiah Buss and Alex Lower before an attack error gave Cairn the win and tied the match at 1-1.

The two teams combined for 40 kills and a .333 hitting percentage in the second set with both teams totaling 20 kills each.

The third set featured just two ties and Stevenson never trailed en route to the seven-point victory.

The fourth set, which saw 13 ties and seven lead changes, was tied at 22-22 before the Highlanders finished with three-straight kills from Andy Willits and Randall Colson. Cairn totaled 17 kills in the set compared to 10 for the Mustangs and trailed 20-18 before taking a 22-20 advantage.

Cairn jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the deciding fifth set before Stevenson pulled within two at 11-9. However, the Highlanders scored four of the final six points on kills by Willits, Colson, Buss and Ryan Garven to post their second-straight five-set victory of the season.

The Mustangs, who are 0-5 in five-set matches this year, got 12 kills from senior Kyle Wisner and 18 digs from senior Scott Morantz. Senior David Moler totaled 53 assists to go along with eight digs.

The quartet of Willits, Colson, Buss and Garven combined for 59 of Cairn's 67 kills with Buss leading the way with 21. He also had 10 digs and five total blocks. Garven had 12 kills and 13 digs while Alex Lower had 57 assists and 14 digs.

Stevenson concludes the regular season with back-to-back CVC road matches at No. 4 Juniata and Thiel next Friday and Saturday April 3-4.

The Mustangs, who are currently in third place in the CVC, are assured of the No. 3 seed in the 2015 CVC Championship as they are two games ahead of Marymount (Va.) and two-and-a-half behind Rutgers-Newark with two to play.

The top four teams make the conference tournament which begins on Friday, April 10.
