Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Despite holding No. 10 Cabrini to just two goals in the second half and scoring six of the game's final nine goals, the Stevenson men's lacrosse team could not overcome a 5-0 second-quarter deficit as the No. 3 Mustangs fell to No. 10 Cabrini Saturday night at Mustang Stadium, 8-6 in the Greene Turtle Classic.
The Mustangs (3-3) have now lost back-to-back games for the first time since 2007 and two-straight home games for the first time since 2004.
Led by two goals from Mike Leyden and a goal and one assist from Ethan Heisman, the Cavaliers built a 5-0 lead with 12:20 remaining in the second quarter.
Stevenson finally got on the board with 3:44 left in half on an unassisted tally by sophomore Kyle D'Donofrio. However, Leyden found Tyler Johnston for the second of his two goals at 2:24 to push Cabrini's lead back to five.
The Mustangs managed a second goal before the half on an own goal by the Cavaliers after a pass to Tyler Morrell tipped off his stick and backspun off the ground into the open net.
Stevenson's two first half goals were the team's lowest since it was shutout at Salisbury in the first half of a 7-2 loss in the semifinals of the NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Championship on May 20, 2012.
Trailing 6-2, the Mustangs outscored Cabrini 4-2 in the second half, but scored just one in the fourth quarter where they committed 10 turnovers. Stevenson finished the game with 32 turnovers, the most since it totaled 36 versus Marymount (Va.) on Apr. 13, 2008.
Five of the Mustangs' six goals were unassisted and they were outshot, 35-32, totaling just 16 in the second half compared to 21 for the Cavaliers.
Stevenson, who was also 0-for-4 with the extra-man, did manage to win 12-of-17 faceoffs with senior Justin Buonomo winning 10-of-12. Meanwhile, junior Ben Richards totaled 10 saves, including eight in the second half with six coming in the third quarter.
Johnston finished with five points on two goals and three assists to lead Cabrini while Leyden and Heisman each finished with two goals and one assist. Morrell made 11 saves.
Stevenson looks to avoid its first three-game losing streak since 2006 when it faces No. 7 Cortland on Sunday beginning at 5:45 p.m.
