Box Score HARRISONBURG, Va. - Stevenson men's volleyball senior Kyle Wisner posted seven kills, becoming the fourth player in program history to reach 1,000 career kills as the Mustangs swept a Continental Volleybal Conference contest over Eastern Mennonite Wednesday at Yoder Arena, 25-20, 25-13, 26-24.
Stevenson (14-10, 5-2 CVC) has now won six of its last eight and is just one game behind Rutgers-Newark for second place in the CVC standings with five remaining. The Mustangs also have a two-and-a-half game lead over Thiel in third. The top four teams advance to the 2015 CVC Championship.
Wisner now has 1,001 career kills and is the third player in the last two seasons to reach 1,000 after Austin Jacoby '14 and Jon Martin '14 both accomplished the feat last season. Jacoby finished his career with 1,208 while Martin posted 1,053. J.R. Jackson '09 holds the school record with 1,511 kills.
Already the school's career leader in total blocks, Wisner added three more on Wednesday and now has 390.
Sophomore Michael Fehrs led Stevenson offensively with 11 kills, his third-straight game in double digits. Over that stretch, he is averaging 13.7 kills per match and 3.73 per set.
Eastern Mennonite (9-6, 2-5 CVC) jumped to an 11-7 lead in the first set before a 6-2 run by the Mustangs tied the set at 13-13. The set featured four ties, the last coming at 18-18 before a 5-0 spurt by Stevenson, keyed by four Royal errors, gave the team a 23-18 advantage.
Back-to-back kills by Fehrs and sophomore Nate Ellis gave the visitors the win.
Eastern Mennonite, who had won four in-a-row entering tonight, took another early lead in the second set at 4-1, but the Mustangs scored 11 of the next 15 points to take a 12-8 advantage. Leading 15-12, Stevenson used two kills each from Fehrs and Ellis as well as five Royal errors to finish the set on a 10-1 run to take a two-set lead.
The Mustangs led for most of the third before the EMU rallied from a three-point deficit to tie the set at 21-21. However, two kills from freshman Alex Klunk and two more Royal errors keyed a 5-3 run for Stevenson to close the set and complete the sweep.
Klunk finished with eight kills and seven total blocks while Ellis had seven kills and six blocks. As a team, the Mustangs totaled 23 blocks and posted a .312 hitting percentage.
Scott Brigham had 13 kills and 11 digs to lead Eastern Mennonite who added eight service aces.
Stevenson continues its six-game conference road streak to finish the regular season next Wednesday, March 25 when the team travels to Marymount (Va.) for 7:00 p.m., match.
