Box Score GRANTHAM, Pa. - Led by a game-high 26 points and a double double by junior Erik Fisher, the Stevenson men's basketball team had five different players score in double figures as the Mustangs posted an 87-81 overtime victory versus Messiah in a Commonwealth Conference contest Wednesday evening at Brubraker Auditorium.
The Mustangs (16-5, 9-3 MAC), who have now won seven-straight, avenged a 75-74 overtime loss to the Falcons at home on January 7. Stevenson is 2-1 in overtime games this season and 6-3 in four years under head coach Gary Stewart.
The Falcons (12-9, 5-8 MAc) connected on four of their six field goal attempts en route to building an 11-6 lead. Messiah would hold two separate six-point leads in the first half, its largest of the game.
Sparked by eight points by Fisher, including two three-pointers, the Mustangs would tie the game at 16-16. Fisher scored 14 of his points in the first half going 5-for-9 from the field.
Back-to-back three-pointers by senior Colby Giacubeno gave Stevenson a 34-29 lead with 4:14 remaining in the first half, but that would be the last field goal of the half for the Mustangs as Messiah closed the half on a 9-1 run.
The second half featured 11 ties and three lead changes as neither team led by more than four points. A layup by junior Sean Farr gave Stevenson a two-point lead with 36 seconds remaining before a dunk by Josh Clippinger just six seconds later tied the game.
The Mustangs held for the final shot of the game but a three-pointer by junior Christian Roberts hit off the back of the iron as the two teams headed to overtime for the second time this season.
Trailing 81-80, Stevenson scored the final seven points, five coming from the free throw line, as the Mustangs stayed just one game back of first-place Lycoming.
After scoring just eight points in his first two games this season, Fisher has totaled double figures in his last 19, while scoring at least 20 points in four of those games. Meanwhile, Giacubeno tied his career-high with 21 points on six three-pointers.
The trio of Farr, Roberts and senior Justin Kuntz all totaled 12 points. Kuntz also added eight rebounds while Roberts totaled six assists.
David Fernandez led four players in double figures for Messiah with 24 points on 11-of-12 shooting. Clippinger finished with 19 points and 13 rebounds.
Stevenson returns to action on Wednesday, February 11 when the Mustangs travel to fourth-place Alvernia beginning at 8:00 p.m. The Mustangs fell to the Crusaders 66-54 in the first meeting between the two teams. Listen live, here.
