Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Led by junior Christian Roberts' 25 points, four Mustangs scored in double figures and the Stevenson men's basketball team ran past Albright, 87-73, for the team's sixth-straight win, Wednesday night at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
The sixth-straight win for Stevenson (15-5, 8-3 MAC) is a season-best streak and keeps them in second place in the conference standings. Albright (8-11, 4-7 MAC), meanwhile, sees its two-game winning streak fall by the wayside and the Lions drop into a tie with Messiah e
Roberts scored at least 20 for the fourth time while senior post Justin Kuntz dumped in 20, junior Erik Fisher added 16, and senior Colby Giacubeno netted 14 points.
DeJuan Smith led Albrght with 19 points, while Omari Ringgold and Thomas Vazzana added 14 and 12, respectively.
After falling behind on an early basket by Evan Ward, Stevenson went on a 13-3 run fueled by Fisher and junior Sean Farr to claim a 13-5 lead less than five minutes into the game. A minute later, Roberts hit his second three-pointer of the game to push the lead to 16-7.
The visitors worked their way back into the game, however, answering with four straight to peg back to within five at 16-11. The spurt was short-lived as the Mustangs responded with back-to-back baskets by junior Julian Davis and Giacubeno.
The lead grew to double-digits for the first time midway through the period as Fisher drained a corner three off of a feed from Giacubeno. Albright consistently inched back into the contest, but Stevenson was able to maintain its lead thanks to Roberts who led all scorers with 14 points at the break. The junior guard connected for one final three of the half, his fourth, with 37 seconds left to give the hosts a 40-31 lead at intermission.
The Mustangs shot 56.7% in the opening period, including going 5-for-9 from three-point range.
In the second half, the visitors scored the first four points to trim the lead to five before Roberts countered once again for Stevenson with a lay-in.
The teams continued to counter-punch with the Lions pulling to within four, 46-42, on a three from the wing by Smith with 15:46 left. Giacubeno hit right back for Stevenson, though, with his own three from the top of the key.
The back-and-forth play kept up as Albright cut the lead to four once again, 58-54, on a jumper by Ringgold, before seven straight from the Mustangs, including an alley-oop from Roberts to Farr, put the hosts back up 11 with 10:39 to play.
Stevenson gradually pulled away again over the next four minutes and Kuntz pushed the lead back to double-digits, 71-60, after backing down his defender and laying it in with 6:36 left to force an Albright timeout.
The Lions could only mount a comeback to cut the lead down to seven, 74-67, on a lay-up by Vazzana before the Mustangs closed out the game on a final 11-6 run.
The Mustang return to action with pair of road games, first visiting Messiah on Saturday evening before taking on Alvernia next Wednesday.
