Box Score 2 ELMIRA, N.Y. - Led by senior Kyle Wisner and junior Patrick Schuyler on the second day of the Mark Twain Cup hosted by Elmira Saturday, the Stevenson men's volleyball team fell to No. 6 Nazareth in four sets 29-27, 25-20, 23-25, 25-19 before the Mustangs swept Penn State Behrend 25-18, 25-15, 25-19 at Speidel Gymnasium.
The Mustangs (9-8) have won five of their last eight with all three losses coming to No. 4 Juniata, No. 15 Elmira and No. 6 Nazareth. Six of Stevenson's eight losses this season have come against nationally-ranked opponents.
All four sets against the Golden Flyers (17-3) were decided by a total of just 15 points. The first set featured eight ties and five lead changes. Nazareth led by as many as six at 14-8 before the Mustangs rallied to tie the set at 22-22.
Stevenson faced two set points in the opening set at 24-23 and 27-26, but Nazareth avoided defeat on kills by Tim Zyburt, the last of which clinched the two-point win.
After a kill by Zyburt broke a 2-2 tie in the second set, the Golden Flyers led the rest of the way, although by no more than six on their way to a 2-0 lead.
The Mustangs overcame 12 ties and six lead changes in the third set as they staved off the sweep by scoring four of the final five points. Trailing 22-21, Stevenson scored four points on two Naz errors and kills by Schuyler and freshman Alex Klunk.
Nazareth never trailed in the deciding fourth set, taking an early 10-2 lead. Stevenson cut its deficit to two at 16-14, but the Golden Flyers finished the set with a 9-4 run to improve its record to 10-0 in neutral site contests.
Schuyler finished with a team-high 15 kills while junior Kyle Pottieger added 12 to go along with 11 digs. Senior David Moler also had 11 digs while totaling 46 assists.
Zyburt had 18 kills for Nazareth while Grant Levermore had 14 kills and nine digs.
Led by 11 kills from Wisner, the Mustangs posted its seventh three-set win of the season against Penn State Behrend. He totaled four of his kills in the first set as Stevenson rallied from a 3-1 deficit to take its largest lead at 19-12.
The Mustangs never trailed in the second set and used an 11-5 run to turn a 2-2 tie into a 13-7 advantage. They stretch their lead to as many as nine before taking a 2-0 lead.
Wisner totaled five of his 11 kills in the decisive third set as Stevenson 10 of the final 14 points to improve to 7-2 in three-set matches this season.
Five players totaled all of the Mustangs' 45 kills as Schuyler added 10 and Klunk had nine. Sophomore Nate Ellis had eight kills while Pottieger totaled seven. Sophomore Kyle Johnson had a match-high 11 digs. Klunk and Moler also had five total blocks.
Stevenson begins a four-game home stand on Wednesday, March 4 when it hosts a tri-match with Marymount (Va.) and Ramapo beginning at 2:00 p.m.
