Box Score GRANTHAM, Pa. - Stevenson men's lacrosse junior Pat Candon scored a career-high five goals while the defense forced 26 turnovers and held Messiah scoreless for the game's final 55:30 as the No. 3 Mustangs opened Commonwealth Conference play with a 13-1 victory over Messiah Wednesday at Starry Athletic Complex.
Stevenson (1-1, 1-0 MAC) is now 17-0 in two-plus seasons in the Commonwealth Conference, having won back-to-back conference titles.
The Mustangs opened the scoring just 34 seconds into the contest when senior defender Callum Robinson netted his first goal of the season and the sixth of his career.
Candon followed with the first of his three first-half goals 1:04 later before Will Franken scored the only goal of the game for the Falcons (0-1, 0-1 MAC) off an assist from Drew Pagenkopf.
Stevenson added two more goals in the quarter, including the first goal for junior Morgan Pritchett since Apr. 26, 2013 and the first of the year from senior Paul Danko. Danko scored eight goals in 25 games at Denver and Towson from 2011-13.
Candon scored both of Stevenson's goals in the second quarter as the Mustangs took a 6-1 lead into halftime.
After senior Billy Burgoyne scored with 8:22 remaining in the third quarter, Candon added his fourth goal and second on the man-advantage with only 50 seconds remaining to extend the Stevenson lead to 8-1.
The Mustangs netted five goals in the fourth, including three from Danko, Burgoyne and Candon before junior Matt Stango scored the ninth goal of his career and first of the season before junior Connor Curro capped the scoring at 3:18 of an assist from Danko.
Led by Candon, a total of 10 players scored for Stevenson with Burgoyne totaling two goals and two assists while Danko added two goals and one assist. Robinson and Stango each finished with a goal and an assist while senior Tony Rossi had two assists.
The Mustangs outshot the Falcons 50-22 while winning 9-of-17 faceoffs and scoring on 2-of-7 extra-man opportunities.
Junior Ben Richards made eight saves before giving way to senior Kevin Cain. Sam Stengel had four first-half saves for Messiah while Brooks Arnold have seven in the second.
Stevenson finally makes its 2015 home debut on Saturday when it hosts Western New England at Mustang Stadium beginning at 7:00 p.m.
