Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. - In just his third appearance of the season, Stevenson men's volleyball freshman Alex Klunk totaled four kills and seven total blocks as the Mustangs opened Continental Volleyball Conference play with a 25-14, 23-25, 25-18, 26-24 victory over Eastern Mennonite Wednesday at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
Stevenson (5-5, 1-0 CVC) snapped a two-game losing skid with its first home win in three tries this season while extending is win streak to nine against the Royals.
The Mustangs made quick work of EMU in the first set, posting 12 kills with just one error in 17 attempts for a .647 hitting percentage. Senior Kyle Wisner totaled four kills and four blocks in the opening set while the Royals were hampered by 15 errors.
The second set featured 12 ties and five lead changes, the last of which came at 23-23 before back-to-back service aces from Scott Brigham tied the match at 1-1.
Klunk totaled four of his seven blocks in the third set as Stevenson managed a win in an error-plaqued set. Both teams combined for 15 attack errors and six service errors. Eastern Mennonite committed 14 of those, 10 attack and four on serve. Senior Wes Richardson had three kills and three digs.
The fourth set was also tightly contested with eight ties and two lead changes. Junior Patrick Schuyler had six of the Mustangs' 13 kills, hitting .750. Stevenson trailed 21-18 before a kill by junior Kyle Pottieger and two Royal errors tied the set at 21-21.
The two teams exchanged points before a kill by Wisner and block assists by Klunk and Schuyler sealed the victory.
Wisner led four Mustangs' who had at least eight kills with 10. Schuyler and Richardson each had nine while Pottieger added eight. Richardson also had a team-high 11 digs. Senior David Moler totaled 35 assists, eight digs and four blocks assists.
Brigham led the Royals (4-3, 1-2 CVC) with 14 kills and 12 digs. Tim Callahan and Justin Spanka has 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Spanka added six digs while Russell Long had 38 assists and five digs.
Stevenson hosts a CVC contest versus Cairn Friday at 7:00 p.m.
