Box Score READING, Pa. - Despite four players scoring in double figures, the Stevenson men's basketball team saw its seven-game win streak come to an end with a 79-69 loss at Alvernia Wednesday night in Commonwealth Conference action at the Physical Education Center.
The loss is the first for Stevenson (16-6, 9-4 MAC) in over a month, since a 66-54 decision to the Crusaders on at Owings Mills Gymnasium on January 10.
Junior Christian Roberts led the Mustangs with 16 points while junior Erik Fisher dropped in 15. Senior Colby Giacubeno and junior Sean Farr each added 14 points.
Stevenson outrebounded Alvernia 40-32, but could not turn the advantage into points as the Crusaders hit 47.5 percent of their shots compared to 43.9 percent for the Mustangs.
After the two teams traded the lead in the early going, the hosts went on an 8-0 run capped by a jumper from Lamont Clark with 13:43 remaining. Alvernia continued to lead midway through the half as Clark paced the attack with 12 points en route to a game-high 23.
However, Stevenson battled back over the next six minutes to draw even at 28-28.
Farr helped spark the Mustangs, connecting for two baskets and dishing out an assist to Fisher. Down three with under four minutes left in the half, Roberts drained a three to tie the game. He led the team with 10 points in the opening half.
The Crusaders slowly built their lead over the first six minutes of the second, claiming a seven-point advantage on a three-pointer by Mike Miller, 47-40.
The Mustangs pulled within two on a jumper by Fisher and lay-up by Farr, but could not draw even before Charles Cooper and Harrison Deyo hit back-to-back shots for Alvernia who led 51-45 with 10:59 left.
The Crusaders led by as many as 14 with 3:36 left before Roberts cut the deficit to single digits, 68-59 with 2:32 remaining. Giacubeno brought the Mustangs within seven with a three, but they could not get any closer.
The Mustangs return home for crucial back-to-back conference games at Owings Mills Gymnasium beginning with Hood on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Stevenson then hosts first-place Lycoming next Tuesday, February 17.
