Schuyler, Richardson Lead No. 14 Mustangs in Four-Set Loss to No. 4 New Paltz

Box Score

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson men's volleyball junior Patrick Schuyler totaled eight kills and eight digs while senior Wes Richardson had eight kills and a .593 hitting percentage, but after taking the first set, the No. 14 Mustangs fell in three-straight, 24-26, 25-23, 25-19, 25-17 to No. 4 SUNY New Paltz Saturday at Owings Mills Gymnasium.

The Mustangs (1-2) have lost back-to-back home games for the first time since Apr. 21, 2012, having posted a 16-6 record since then.

Despite just eight kills and a .111 hitting percentage, Stevenson won the first set 26-24 after rallying from a 17-13 deficit and tying the set at 19-19. The Mustangs scored three of the final four points all on New Paltz errors.

Stevenson rallied from a five-point deficit in the second set to tie it at 18-18 before taking a 23-22 lead, but the Hawks scored the final three points on back-to-back kills by Anthony Bonilla and one from Steven Woessner, tying the match at 1-1.

The Mustangs, who played nine sets and nearly four hours of volleyball against two nationally-ranked teams Saturday, were overpowered by the 2014 national semifinalists in the final two sets as the Hawks posted 30 kills and a .377 hitting percentage compared to 14 kills and a .094 percentage for the Mustangs.

New Paltz (2-0) scored seven out of 10 points to break a 10-10 tie in the third set and take a 17-13 advantage en route to a six-point win before jumping out to a 5-0 lead in the fourth and never trailing for an eight-point victory in the deciding fourth set.

Junior Kyle Pottieger finished with a team-high nine kills and six digs, but was hampered by 12 errors. Sophomore Michael Fehrs added seven kills and six digs while senior David Moler had 32 assists, two service aces and seven digs.

Christopher Hussman led the Hawks with 17 kills while Woessner added 11 to go with six total blocks. Bonilla had 10 kills, six digs and three service aces.

Stevenson returns to action next weekend with three matches hosted by Medaille. The Mustangs face Hilbert on Saturday at 1:00 p.m., before taking on No. 15 Medaille at 3:00 p.m.
