OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Jim Cusick scored five goals, the last of which came with just 22 seconds remaining as Washington College posted a 12-11 victory over Stevenson in the quarterfinals of the 2014 NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Championship Wednesday night at Mustang Stadium.

The Mustangs (19-3), who finish the season with their sixth-straight quarterfinal appearance, suffered their first loss in 11 NCAA tournament games at Mustang Stadium. The loss also snapped the team's seven-game tournament win streak.

Senior Chris Dashiell led Stevenson with seven points with two goals and five assists, finishing his career ranked fifth in school history with 218 points and third with 135 points. He also set the new school record for career games played with 90, tying him with senior Ryan Rubenstein.

Stevenson jumped out to a 3-1 lead after the first quarter before the Shoremen outscored the Mustangs 6-0 in the second to take a 7-3 halftime lead. After being outshot 14-6 in the opening quarter, Washington held a 15-9 margin in the second, holding Stevenson scoreless in a quarter for the first time this season.

In the third quarter, the Mustangs outscored the Shoremen 6-3 with Dashiell accounting for five of the goals with a goal and four assists. His fifth assist of the game to senior Glen Tompkins with 4:03 remaining tied the game for the third time at 9-9.

Led by a goal and an assist from Hunter Nowicki, Washington (18-1) scored back-to-back goals to take a two-goal lead with 12:45 left in the game before Dashiell tied the game at 11-11 with 3:26 remaining.

Even after Cusick put the Shoremen ahead with 22 seconds to play, senior Brent Hiken, who went 21-of-27 on face-offs, gave Stevenson a chance to tie the game for the fifth time after winning the ensuing draw leading to a Mustang time out with 18 seconds remaining.

However, Stevenson could not get a shot off, committing its 15th turnover of the game to seal the first win for the Shoremen in the series since 2006.

In two seasons with the Mustangs, Hiken finished third in school history with 452 face-off wins while setting the record with a .715 face-off percentage. He also totaled 311 ground balls to finish third for a career while setting the standard for a single-season with 178 this year.

With four caused turnovers, senior Kyle Holechek finished the season with 49 to rank third in school history while setting the career record with 139, surpassing Evan Douglass who had 136. Meanwhile, sophomore Callum Robinson totaled 36 caused turnovers this season and already ranks fourth in school history for a career with 71.

On Wednesday, the two teams combined to go 9-for-12 on extra-man opportunities with Stevenson going 4-for-6. One of those man-up goals came from junior Colin Dabney who tied Mark Panneton's school record for a single season with 14.

Sophomore Dimitri Pecunes totaled 10 saves, but suffered his first loss in eight NCAA tournament games. He is now 36-4 in two seasons at Stevenson while ranking third in school history with a 7.60 goals against average and seventh with a .554 saves percentage.

Over the last four years, Stevenson has posted a school record 77-13 record, including a mark of 11-3 in the NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Championship while winning the school's first national championship in 2013.
