READING, Pa. - Led by a three-hit game by senior Brianna Dieter, the Stevenson softball team snapped its four-game losing streak with a 4-1 victory before its seventh-inning rally fell short in game two as the Mustangs split a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader versus Alvernia Tuesday at Angelica Park.
The Mustangs (12-13, 2-6 MAC) totaled ten more hits than the Crusaders (12-8, 4-3 MAC) and finished 8-for-14 with runners in scoring position.
Stevenson got on the board early in game one as sophomore Kristen Mueller doubled to open the game before fellow sophomore Tiffany Kahl added an RBI single to score her Mueller third. Kahl would add an unearned run, scoring on a throwing error by the catcher.
Alvernia cut the deficit in half, scoring its lone run of the game, an unearned run following a fielder error. But junior Briana Pichalski and the Stevenson defense held the Crusaders to just two more hits for the game as Pichalski struck out four.
In game two it was the Crusaders who got out to an early lead, putting up three runs in the first inning. Alvernia would score three more runs over the next four innings to mount a 6-0 lead heading into the top of the seventh.
With the bases loaded and two outs, Kahl hit a two RBI double before senior Kristen Fassler hit a two RBI single to cut the deficit to 6-4 before Alvernia returned its starting pitcher to record the final out.
Stevenson will play at Weinberg Fine Stadium for the first time this season when it hosts a Commonwealth Commonwealth doubleheader versus Widener. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
