Nineteen Different Scorers Highlight No. 4 Mustangs' Victory Over Alvernia

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - A total of 19 players scored at least one goal as the No. 4-ranked Stevenson men's lacrosse team set new school records for goals, shots and ground balls in a 30-0 Commonwealth Conference victory over Alvernia Saturday night at Mustang Stadium.

The Mustangs (10-1, 3-0 MAC) posted their second shutout in school history, both of which have come against Alvernia, after they defeated the Crusaders 24-0 on the road a year ago on Apr. 6, 2013.

Stevenson, who totaled 106 shots and 86 ground balls, held a 10-0 lead at the end of the first quarter after holding a 32-1 margin in shots, a 27-11 edge in ground balls and winning 10-of-11 face-offs.

Sophomore Stephen Banick led the Mustangs offensively, totaling four goals and five points. He was one of seven players who scored at least two goals and one of three who found the back of the net three times. Freshman Tyler Fuhrman and sophomore Matt Stango each netted three.

Nine players scored their first goals of the season, including senior Brent Hiken who added an assist and won 8-of-9 on face-offs. Sophomore Nick Gorassi and freshman Hunter Schmell also totaled one goal and one assist with Schmell netting his first career tally.

Freshman Billy Able and Chance Weinberg also scored their first career goals in the fourth quarter.

Stevenson won 29-of-34 face-offs and totaled 20 caused turnovers while five different goals combined for four saves. Sophomore Connor Skeen and freshman Mark Wollenweber each made their first appearance of the season in goal with Wollenweber totaling two saves in the final 5:14.

Mikhail Gardner made a career-high 31 saves for the Crusaders (2-10, 0-3 MAC).

Stevenson travels to Hood on Wednesday for a Commonwealth Conference contest beginning at 3:30 p.m.
