Box Score 2 OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson softball sophomore Molly Hoyt had the game-winning RBI while also earning the win on the mound as the Mustangs won their second extra-inning game this season with a 4-3 victory over Washington (Md.) before dropping game two 9-1 in a doubleheader split Wednesday afternoon at Weinberg-Fine Stadium.
The Mustangs (15-20), who are 2-1 in extra-inning games this season, snapped a four-game losing streak and remains .500 in six home games this season.
Stevenson scored first in the bottom of the first inning after sophomore Tiffany Kahl singled to left field to score fellow classmate Kristen Mueller. Mueller leads the team with 18 stolen bases, the teams single season record. The Mustangs are 10-5 when scoring first.
The Shorewomen (11-16) tied the game in the third inning after a two-out RBI double by Paige Briganti. Stevenson's opponents are hitting .304 with two outs.
In the top of the eighth inning, Suzanne Patinella hit a two-out triple to put Washington (Md.) ahead before the Mustangs responded as an groundout by Kahl allowed Mueller to score.
For the fifth and sixth times in the game, the Shorewomen managed a hit with two outs, the first scoring a run. In the bottom of the inning, senior Kristen Fassler came around to score after a single by freshman Naomi Fields and throwing error.
With a runner on third, Hoyt hit a single through the left side for the walk-off victory. Hoyt finished 2-for-4 while also totaled her sixth win of the season after allowing just one earned run through nine innings.
In game two, Stevenson was only able to manage four hits while Washington (Md.) totaled 14. After trailing 1-0 early, the Mustangs tied the game after a RBI double by Hoyt in the fourth inning. However, the Shorewomen would score eight runs over the final three innings, including five in the sixth.
Hoyt once again finished 2-for-4, this time with two doubles. She currently leads the team with a .381 batting average and a 2.33 ERA.
Kristen Cooper earned the win over after striking out five. She also went 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs.
Stevenson returns to action on Saturday, April 26 when it hosts a Commonwealth Conference contest versus Albright on senior day. The Mustangs will also be hosting its annual Strikeout Cancer Game and encourage all fans to wear pink. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
