WESTMINSTER, Md. - Caroline Brehm totaled 15 strikeouts before McDaniel rallied from three runs down as the Stevenson softball team dropped its fourth-straight after being swept by the Green Terror in a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at the Green Terror Softball Field.
The Mustangs (14-19) were shutout for the third-straight time and and sixth time this season after falling 4-0 in game one. The team had been outscored 14-0 in three games prior to a 9-6 loss in game two to the Green Terror.
For the second time this season, Stevenson was held to a season low two hits in game one. In their losses, the Mustangs have been held to just 6.1 hits per game while totaling 9.3 in wins.
With McDaniel (23-11) leading 1-0 in the bottom of the fifth, Jaclyn Liebowitz hit a two-out solo home run for her first long ball of the year. The Green Terror doubled their lead in the bottom of the sixth after totaling three two-out hits, including a two-RBI single by Amy Baumgardner.
Baumgardner finished the day 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Brehm, who leads all of Division III with 275 strikeouts, earned her 20th win of the season, which ranks third in Division III.
Sophomore Tiffany Kahl and senior Kristen Fassler totaled the two Mustang hits. Stevenson was also caught stealing for just the ninth time in 58 tries this season.
In game two, sophomore Kristen Mueller lead off with a double before scoring on an error that allowed senior Lindsay Kuczak to get on base. Kahl followed with an RBI single that scored Kuczak from second. Kuczak added her second RBI of the game with a single in the second inning that scored Mueller as the Mustangs led 3-0.
With two outs in the bottom of the third, the Green Terror scored four unearned runs, including a three-run homer by Stephanie Maring.
After a RBI single by Mueller that scored junior Abbey DeFeo to tie the game at four, McDaniel scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to reclaim the lead. Stevenson answered with two runs on a bases loaded two-RBI double by freshman Naomi Fields to cut the deficit to one.
However, that would be the last run Stevenson would score as the Green Terror added two insurance runs over the final two innings. Brehm added four more strikeouts in 2.1 innings for her first save of the year.
Mueller and Kahl each finished with two hits as the Mustangs first three batters totaled half of the teams 10 runs.
All but one of McDaniel's 12 runs on the day came with two outs in the inning.
Stevenson returns to action on Wednesday, April 23 when they host a non-conference doubleheader with Washington (Md.). First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
