Mustangs Advance to Fourth ECAC Championship, Fall to Wentworth, 3-2

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson men's volleyball senior Jon Martin totaled 11 kills and 11 digs in the title game of the ECAC Division III Men's Volleyball Championship, but after building a two-set lead, the Mustangs fell to Wentworth Saturday at Owings Mills Gymnasium, 25-22, 25-19, 23-25, 16-25, 12-15.

Stevenson (22-9), who won the 2011 and 2013 ECAC South Championship, concludes its 2014 season with its fifth postseason appearance and fifth 20-win season in the last six years. The Mustangs are 6-3 in five ECAC appearances and have hosted it every year in 2009, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014 while advancing to four title games.

Against Wentworth, sophomore Kyle Pottieger had a team-high 13 kills to go along with seven digs, three blocks and two aces. Senior Eddy Klepper and junior Kyle Wisner combined for 21 kills and seven total blocks while senior Adam Thatcher posted a season-high 18 digs for the second time this season.

The Leopards (27-8) were led by Most Outstanding Player Ross Burdett who totaled 18 kills and 14 digs. Jake Reed added 13 kills and 12 digs while Sam Pisker had 11 kills and eight digs.

In the semifinals, Stevenson defeated Hunter, 25-15, 20-25, 25-19, 25-20. Martin led the team with 15 kills and 12 digs while four other players added 11 kills, including Klepper,Wisner, Pottieger and sophomore Patrick Schuyler

Junior David Moler tied his season-high with 56 assists adding nine digs.

As a team, Stevenson posted a season-high .341 hitting percentage with 60 kills and 16 errors on 129 attempts.

The Hawks (17-15) were led by Nino Hot and Matthew Ng who each had 10 kills. Stanley Martinez added nine kills, 40 assists and 13 digs. 

The Mustangs finished the season with eight wins in its last 10 games and seven of their nine losses came against teams ranked in the top-15 of the AVCA Division III Coaches' Poll.

Martin finishes his career as the first player to total 1,000 career kills and 1,000 career digs and ranks third in kills with 1,053 and second in digs with 1,073. Thatcher holds the school record for career digs with 1,148.
