GRANTHAM, Pa. - The Stevenson softball team totaled seven errors en route to four unearned runs by Messiah as the Falcons shutout the Mustangs 2-0 and 8-0 in a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader sweep Thursday afternoon at Starry Field.
The games marked the fourth and fifth times that the Mustangs (14-7, 4-10 MAC) were shutout this season. For the second time in five games, the team totaled a season-high five errors and have committed at least one error in the last 12 games.
Stevenson put itself in an early scoring position as senior Lindsay Kuczak and sophomore Tiffany Kahl stole third and second, respectively. The team is averaging 1.6 steals per game and has only been caught stealing eight times.
The Falcons (21-7, 10-2 MAC) scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the sixth after Amanda Jones advanced home after the throw to first for the second out of the inning. Katie Tankred then singled before advancing to second on an error and eventually scoring unearned on a second Mustang error.
In game two, Messiah broke open a 1-0 game after totaling four runs on six hits in the third inning. The Falcons would add there more runs, all unearned, as Stevenson fell for the second time this season in five innings.
The Mustangs totaled just eight hits on the afternoon marking the fourth and fifth time the team has totaled less than five hits this season. Kuczak and Kahl combined for five hits, including four in game one.
Stevenson wraps up its regular season road schedule on Tuesday, April 22 when its travels to face local rival McDaniel in a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled at 3:00 p.m.
