Mustangs Fall to Juniata in CVC Championship, Moler, Martin All-Tournament

Box Score

GREENVILLE, Pa. - Playing against rival Juniata for the third time this season, the Stevenson men's volleyball team was swept in three sets by the third-ranked Eagles in the title game of the 2014 Continental Volleyball Conference Championship Sunday at Thiel's Beeghly Gymnasium, 25-15, 25-18, 25-11.

The loss was the first for the Mustangs (21-8) since a 3-1 defeat at Kean on March 21, snapping their season-long seven-game win streak which included a 3-1 victory over Juniata on the road on April 4.

For their efforts this weekend, senior Jon Martin and junior David Moler were both named to the 2014 CVC All-Tournament Team. Martin totaled eight kills and 10 digs against the Eagles and finished the tournament with 15 kills and 20 digs while Moler added 67 assists, 12 digs and three total blocks.

Keyed by a .324 hitting percentage and 19 total blocks, Juniata avenged a 3-1 home loss to Stevenson on April 4.

With the first set tied at 3-3, the Eagles used a 5-1 run to double up the Mustangs following back-to-back blocks. Juniata, who hit .500 and had 12 kills, never trailed again en route to the 10-point victory. The Eagles also totaled 4.5 team blocks.

The second set saw Juniata total 14 kills in the set led by four each from Alex McColgin and Chad Albert on just 13 swings. Stevenson pulled within 8-7 on a kill by Martin, but an attack error gave the ball back to the Eagles who went on a 5-2 spurt to take a 14-9 lead and the Mustangs could not get any closer than three for the remainder of the set.

Juniata recorded six team blocks in the third set and jumped out to a 12-4 lead before clinching its second-straight championship on a block solo by Joe Bortak.

Moler had 23 assists while sophomore Patrick Schuyler added five kills and four digs.

Matt Elias, who was named tournament Most Valuable Player, finished with 29 assists and four digs while Albert and Paul Kuhn led the Eagles with eight kills. McColgin totaled six kills, seven digs and seven total blocks as he and Albert joined Elias on the All-Tournament Team.

Juniata receives the league's automatic bid to the 2014 NCAA Division III Men's Volleyball Championship while Stevenson will await to see if they receive an at-large bid. The 10-team field will be announced on NCAA.com at 10:00 a.m., on Monday.
