Fassler Homers as Mustangs Split Commonwealth DH Versus Widener

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Senior Kristen Fassler hit her fifth career home run and first of the season as the Stevenson softball team defeated Widener 5-1 in game one of a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader before the Mustangs fell 8-2 in game two Saturday afternoon at Weinberg Fine Stadium.

The Mustangs (13-14, 3-7 MAC) totaled six errors on the day, including a season-high five in game two. The team is averaging just under three errors a game in the past six.

In the bottom of the third inning, sophomore Kristen Mueller drew a bases loaded walk before sophomore Laura Welch did the same two batters later as the Mustangs got on the board first. Stevenson is 9-4 this season when scoring first.

Fassler hit a bases empty home run to left field to push the lead to 3-0. It was the teams ninth home run this season matching last years total.

The Mustangs added two sixth inning runs, the first by junior Abbey DeFeo after senior Lindsay Kuczak reached on an error by the center fielder. Mueller added her second RBI of the day after her two out single scored Kuczak from third.

Pinch hitter Salina Allebach hit a bases loaded single in the seventh inning to score the runner from third for Widener's lone run of the game.

Junior Briana Pichalski allowed seven hits and one run for her eighth win of the season tying her career-high set a season ago.

The Pride (15-7, 5-5 MAC) scored three first inning runs in game two as two runs scored after the first of five Stevenson errors. Carissa Harris singled through the left side before the runners from first and second both scored after the Mustangs tried to throw the lead runner out at home.

Widener extended its lead to 5-0 in the third inning after two unearned runs scored from second and third on a throwing error by the shortstop after checking the runner at third.

The Mustangs got one run back in the bottom of the inning as freshman Jenna Fiamingo and Kuczak hit back-to-back sacrifice flies, the latter scoring freshman Nicole Dell from third. Stevenson then cut its deficit to four as Fiamingo totaled just her fourth RBI to score DeFeo. But the Pride added two more unearned runs on two Mustang errors in the seventh inning.

Liz Antonucci went 4-for-4 in the game for Widener. Meanwhile, DeFeo finished 4-for-6 on the day with two runs and now ranks third in the conference with a .432 batting average.

Stevenson returns to action tomorrow, Sunday, April 13 when it hosts a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader versus Lycoming at Weinberg Fine Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
