Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Despite 12 kills from senior Austin Jacoby and nine kills and eight digs from senior Jon Martin, the No. 15 Stevenson men's volleyball dropped its first Continental Volleyball Conference contest of the season Friday night versus No. 2 Juniata 21-25, 25-17, 22-25, 25-22, 15-8 at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
The Mustangs (12-6, 3-1 CVC), who fell at home for the first time since Mar. 27, 2013, had 22 total blocks, but could not overcome 43 errors, including 21 attack and 16 service. The team also had just 34 digs compared to 65 kills for the Eagles.
Stevenson is now 1-1 in five-set matches this season and 7-6 over the last two.
The first set featured six ties and four lead changes before the Mustangs used a 5-0 run to turn a 10-8 deficit into a 13-10 lead that they would not relinquish. They finished with 11 kills, seven of which came from Martin and junior Kyle Wisner.
After falling behind two sets to one, Juniata (17-3, 4-0 CVC) jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the fourth set before Stevenson used a 6-2 run, capped by block assists from Martin and senior Eddy Klepper, to tie the set at 22-22 which led to a timeout by the Eagles.
However, following the timeout, Juniata scored the final three-straight points on kills by Kameron Beans and Joe Bortak and an attack error by the Mustangs.
The Eagles ran away with the fifth set, totaling 10 kills and a .304 hitting percentage to break a 4-4 tie with an 11-4 run to seal the victory. They also had 11 digs while limiting Stevenson to just two kills and a minus-.056 hitting percentage.
Wisner finished with nine kills while sophomore Kyle Pottieger added six. Junior David Moler finished with 36 assists, eight digs and four kills while junior Scott Morantz also added eight digs.
Juniata was led by Alex McColgin who had 18 kills and Bortak who added 15. Justin Waldorf finished with 13 kills and 10 digs.
Stevenson returns to action on Saturday when it hosts a Continental Volleyball Conference contest versus Thiel beginning at 2:00 p.m., at Student Union Gymnasium on the Greenspring campus.
