Six-Goal Second Quarter Leads No. 4 Mustangs Over No. 8 Lynchburg, 13-5

Box Score

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Seven different players scored a point, highlighted by a goal and an assist from junior Billy Burgoyne, as the fourth-ranked Stevenson men's lacrosse team scored six second-quarter goals to take 10-3 halftime lead en route to a 13-5 road victory at No. 8 Lynchburg Saturday at Shellenberger Field.

The Mustangs (9-1), who have now won three-straight in the series, won their eighth-straight overall while avenging a 6-3 loss to the Hornets in the last meeting between the two teams on the same field back on Mar. 10, 2012.

Burgoyne was one of six different goal scorers in the second quarter for Stevenson who outshot Lynchburg, 14-5. The Mustangs led by seven at halftime after outshooting the Hornets 30-10 in the first half.

After Lynchburg's Todd Galvin scored his second goal of the game with 7:47 remaining in the first quarter to tie the game at 2-2, Stevenson finished the half on an 8-1 run over the final 18:27. Senior Glen Tompkins scored all three of his goals in the opening half while sophomore Stephen Banick added two.

Sophomore Alex Hardwick scored his first goal of the season with 8:43 left in the second quarter and it proved to be the game-winner as he put the Mustangs in front, 6-3.

Galvin accounted for all three of the Hornets' tallies.

Saturday's game featured a lot of storylines as it was a match-up of two of the nation's top-10 teams and a rematch of last year's NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Championship quarterfinal contest won by Stevenson at Mustang Stadium, 13-7. It was also a contest between two teams who went 2-0 at last weekend's Mustang Classic.

Led by nine saves from sophomore Dimitri Pecunes and three caused turnovers by freshman Josh Rufolo, the Mustang defense held Lynchburg to its lowest goal total of the season and its fewest since May 12, 2012 in a 10-5 loss to Denison in the second round of the NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Championship.

The Hornets' 24 shots were also their lowest total since they were held to 18 in a 16-8 loss at Stevenson on Mar. 12, 2011.

Galvin finished with three goals for Lynchburg (6-3) while Aaron Murphy scored twice. Andrew Fawkes made 12 saves in goal.

The Mustangs return to action next Saturday, April 5 when they host a Commonwealth Conference contest versus Alvernia at Mustang Stadium beginning at 7:00 p.m. Stevenson defeated the Crusaders 24-0 a year ago.
