Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson men's volleyball senior Jon Martin totaled 11 kills and 11 digs while sophomore Kyle Pottieger had 14 kills as the 15th-ranked Mustangs posted a 25-27, 25-12, 25-19, 25-23 Continental Volleyball Conference victory over Eastern Mennonite Friday night at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
With the win, Stevenson (17-7, 6-1 CVC) secured the No. 2 seed from the East Division in next month's CVC Championship. As a result, the Mustangs will be matched up against the third-seed from the West which is currently Mount St. Joseph.
The 2014 CVC Championship is April 12-13 at Thiel's Beeghly Gymnasium.
Stevenson also posted its 10th win in the last 12 games while improving its record at home to 5-1 this season and 14-3 over the last two.
With 11 digs, Martin now has 996 for his career, four shy of becoming just the second player in school history to total 1,000. He also has 979 career kills, needing 21 to become the first player in the 12-year history of the program to total 1,000 career kills and 1,000 career digs.
The first set featured 13 ties and four lead changes with Eastern Mennonite (11-12, 1-7 CVC) using a 4-0 run to take a 19-15 lead. Following a timeout, the Mustangs battled back to tie the set at 23-23 on a kill by junior David Moler.
The score was tied two more times at 24-24 and 25-25 before the Royals edged out the two-point victory on a kill by Scott Brigham and a Stevenson attack error. Brigham totaled seven of his match-high 16 kills in the set.
The Mustangs led from start to finish in the second set, jumping out to a 6-0 lead before extending it to as many as 15 at 23-8.
Stevenson also never trailed in the third set, overcoming four ties and using a 4-0 run to take a 13-9 lead.
The Mustangs trailed 3-2 in the fourth set before a 5-1 run gave them a three-point lead they would never relinquish as they improved their record to 5-4 in four-set matches this season.
Senior Austin Jacoby finished with 10 kills as the trio of Pottieger, Martin and Jacoby totaled 35 of the team's 52 kills. Jacoby now has 1,197 for his career, just three shy of 1,200. Junior Kyle Wisner had seven kills to go along with three block assists.
Senior Eddy Klepper had three kills, four digs and five total blocks while senior Adam Thatcher posted eight digs in his first match since February 21. Thatcher further added to his school record for career digs and now has 1,074.
Moler added 36 assists, eight digs and three block assists.
Brigham had 16 kills and six digs for Eastern Mennonite while Jesse Reist added five kills and 11 digs. Zach Guiciardi had 24 assists and four digs.
Stevenson plays its final regular-season home game on Saturday when the Mustangs wrap up their CVC schedule versus Marymount (Va.) on Senior Night beginning at 7:00 p.m. Prior to the match, the team will honor its five seniors in Martin, Jacoby, Klepper, Thatcher and Johnny Powell.
