Box Score CINCINNATI, Ohio - Stevenson men's volleyball sophomore Patrick Schuyler had 12 kills, one short of his season-high, while senior Jon Martin added nine kills as the 11th-ranked Mustangs posted a 25-17, 31-29, 25-18 victory over host Mount St. Joseph in a CVC crossover contest Sunday at the Harrington Center.
The win snapped a three-game road losing streak for Stevenson (6-3) and marked the team's first-ever meeting against the Lions who added men's volleyball in 2009 and joined the CVC for its first season in 2012.
The Mustangs jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first set after two MSJ attack errors and a service ace by Martin. Stevenson finished the set with 11 kills while the Lions had just four and a minus-.100 hitting percentage.
The tightly contested second set featured five ties and two set points for Mount St. Joseph, before a kill by Martin and an attack error by the Lions tied the set at 24-24. After six more ties, the Mustangs won the set after a kill from freshman Nathan Ellis and a MSJ attack error.
The 31 points needed by Stevenson to win the set were the most by the team in the 25-point era, tying the mark set on Feb. 11, 2012 when the team lost the second set at RIT, 33-31.
The Mustangs jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the third set before extending their to as many as nine, 23-14.
Martin finished with nine kills, seven digs and five of the team's service aces. Senior Adam Thatcher finished with 14 digs while junior David Moler had 41 assists and 10 digs. Junior Kyle Wisner had four kills while posting a .571 hitting percentage.
The Lions (6-4) were led by Alex Vohland who had 15 kills and six digs. Luke Eschenbach added 27 assists and three digs.
Stevenson travels to Stevens on Saturday, February 15 for a tri-match versus the host Ducks at 1:00 p.m., and Hunter at 3:00 p.m.
