Box Score CHESTER, Pa. - The Stevenson men's basketball team shot just 26.9 percent in the second half compared to 60.0 percent for Widener, as the Pride posted a 57-51 victory over the Mustangs Wednesday at Schwartz Center.
The Mustangs (13-7, 8-5 MAC) dropped their third-straight game as the team totaled its lowest output of the season at 51. However, they gave up a season-best 57 points.
In the first meeting back on Jan. 4, the two teams combined to score 205 points compared to just 108 in tonights game.
After trading baskets in the games first five minutes, senior Alfonzo Hawkins hit a three-pointer to spark a 9-0 run which was capped off by an alley oop dunk by sophomore Tyrus Costley.
Stevenson would hold its largest lead of the game at 23-15 with 8:05 remaining following a three-point basket by freshman Darius Walker.
The Mustangs connected on 4-of-9 three-pointers while shooting 57.1 percent from the floor in the first half to give them a 30-27 lead at the break.
Back-to-back layups by Laron Byrd to open the second half gave the Pride (10-10, 4-9 MAC) its first lead since the score was 11-8 with 15:07 remaining in the first.
Widener would extend its lead to 39-34 after a three-pointer from Dillon Fields at the 14:25 mark. However six-straight points, including four by Hawkins, would give the Mustangs the lead.
Following a jumper by junior Colby Giacubeno which gave Stevenson a 47-46 lead, the Pride used an 8-0 run to give them their largest lead of the game at seven with 2:30 remaining in the game.
A layup by Hawkins would cut the deficit to just three with 1:26 left in the contest, but that would be the last points the Mustangs would score.
Hawkins led the team with 17 points while junior Justin Kuntz added 13 points, five rebounds, three steals and three blocks. Sophomore Christian Roberts dished out five assists.
Fields led Widener with 17 points while Greg Lawson totaled 11 points and a game-high 22 rebounds.
The Pride held a 40-22 edge in rebounds while the Mustangs totaled 25 points off 25 turnovers.
Stevenson returns to action on Saturday, February 8 when it hosts a Commonwealth Conference contest with Lycoming beginning at 1:00 p.m. The Mustangs defeated the Warriors 79-74 on Jan. 19.
