Late Rally, Stick Check Lead No. 2 RIT Past No. 1 Mustangs in Overtime, 15-14

Box Score

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - A stick check at the start of overtime, followed by an illegal procedure against the Stevenson men's lacrosse team gave No. 2 RIT a 15-14 victory over the top-rankd Mustangs Saturday at the Carrier Dome in a rematch of the 2013 NCAA Division III national championship game.

Stevenson (1-1) lost for the first time in four meetings against the Tigers after going 2-0 against them a year ago. Saturday also marked the second-straight regular season overtime contest between the two teams after the Mustangs won 12-11 at Mustang Stadium on Feb. 27, 2013.

RIT (1-0) trailed 14-10 with 1:30 remaining in the fourth quarter before Casey Jackson scored the first of back-to-back goals, the second of which cut the Tigers' deficit to two with 57 seconds to play.

Jackson would score three of the final four goals for RIT, including the game-tying tally as the clock expired in the fourth quarter. He finished with five points and four goals.

Just like last week against York (Pa.), Stevenson won the opening face-off to start overtime before calling a timeout. During the timeout, RIT head coach Jake Coon called for a stick check on sophomore Justin Buonomo who won 11-of-15 face-offs in the game.

After a lenghty discussion, the officials declared the stick illegal, charging a 3:00 unreleasable penalty on the Mustangs and more importantly, giving the Tigers the ball at midfield in a sudden victory situation.

However, the Mustangs' man-down defense, which held the Tigers to just 2-of-6 on extra-man opportunities on the day, was able to force a turnover, giving Stevenson a second opportunity to net the game-winning goal.

Unfortunately, the Mustangs could not capitalize, turning the ball back over to RIT where a shot by Allister Warren was saved by sophomore Dimitri Pecunes. During the fight for the ground ball, Pecunes appeared to be shoved in the back while out of the crease, but there was no call. As a result, Jack Krzyston scooped up possession and found Taylor Wisman for the game-winning empty net goal.

Warren finished with six points on a goal and five assists while Wisman netted his first goal of the season.

Pecunes totaled 14 saves in the loss. Pat Johnson had 17 for RIT.

Senior Glen Tompkins had a career-high five goals while junior Sam Wyatt scored twice. A total of 10 players scored for Stevenson, nine of which had at least one goal. Buonomo had nine ground balls and senior Brent Hiken had seven after winning 8-of-16 face-offs.

The Mustangs, who outshot the Tigers 53-49, scored seven first-quarter goals and led 13-7 after three.

Stevenson return home to face No. 12 Western New England next Saturday, March 1 at Mustang Stadium.
