NEW YORK, N.Y. - Stevenson men's volleyball sophomore Patrick Schuyler and senior Jon Martin both totaled 23 kills as the 14th-ranked Mustangs dropped two contests on Friday at the Baruch Invitational, falling to No. 12 Stevens and No. 5 Nazareth at Baruch's ARC Arena.
Stevenson (7-5) fell to Stevens 25-22, 16-25, 25-22, 25-20 before losing to Nazareth, 25-15, 13-25, 25-22, 25-23. Four fo the Mustangs' five losses this season have come to teams ranked in the AVCA Division III Coaches' Poll while the fifth came against Lakeland, who while not ranked at the time, is currently at No. 8 in the latest poll.
The match against Stevens (7-4) was very tightly contested as each set was within five points, except for the second set in which the Mustangs won by nine points. Schuyler led the team with a season-high 15 kills while also adding five digs. Martin had a season-high 14 kills to go along with five service aces and eight digs.
Chris Vaughan and Gabe Shankweiler led Stevens, combining for 27 of the team's 50 kills and 18 of its 46 digs. Vaughan finished with a team-high 14 kills and nine digs while Shankweiler finished with 13 kills and nine digs.
Against Nazareth (7-3), Stevenson totaled a season-high 47 digs, but couldn't edge out victories in the third and fourth sets. Sophomore Kyle Pottieger totaled a team-high 10 kills while Martin posted nine and Schuyler added eight. Senior Eddy Klepper posted five kills and a .400 hitting percentage while junior David Moler added 33 assists and four digs. Junior Scott Morantz totaled a season-high 10 digs.
Tim Zyburt led the Golden Flyers with 12 kills and five digs while Luke Lawatsch added nine kills and six block assists.
Stevenson concludes the Baruch Invitational against the host and seventh-ranked Bearcats on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
