Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Led by five steals and three blocks from sophomore Sara Tarbert, the Stevenson women's basketball totaled 17 steals and 29 points off turnovers while holding Virginia Wesleyan to just nine first half points en route to a 69-46 victory over Virginia Wesleyan Sunday at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
The Mustangs (3-2) have won three-straight at home and nine of the last 10. They also avenged last season's 72-56 loss to the Marlins at home on Dec. 15, 2013.
Tarbert also added 14 points and 14 rebounds for her fourth consecutive double double, tying the longest streak by a Mustang since the 2007-08 season. Senior Kyarra Harmon added 13 points, eight rebounds and four assists as the duo shot a combined 13-for-21 from the floor for 61.9 percent.
Stevenson held Virginia Wesleyan (2-3) without a point for the game's first 6:56 as it built a 15-0 lead.
After back-to-back three-pointers by Kelly Jones got the Marlins on the scoreboard, a lay-up by Brittany Glasco cut their deficit to 11 at 19-8 with 10:40 remaining in the first half, but that would be the last point for Virginia Wesleyan until a free thow by Naeemah Morris with 22 seconds left.
The Mustangs held the Marlins scoreless for 19:38 in the first half and led 28-9 at the half. Virginia Wesleyan was just 3-of-24 from the floor, including 2-of-11 from three-point range and 1-of-8 from the free throw line. They also committed 19 turnovers.
Tarbert totaled 10 points, 10 rebounds in the opening half while Harmon had six points.
Despite the Marlins scoring 37 points and shooting 48.3 percent in the second half, Stevenson never let its lead slip below 20 points as it led from start to finish. The Mustangs shot 51.9 percent from the floor and scored 14 points off of 12 Virginia Wesleyan turnovers.
Senior Ty Bender finished with eight points, five rebounds and three assists after missing one game due to injury while senior Kayleigh Guzek added eight points and three steals.
Crystal Strother led the Marlins with nine points while three others all had eight.
