Balanced Attack, Tough Defense Leads Stevenson to 68-56 Win over Cairn

Box Score

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Led by Christian Roberts' 16 points, three Mustangs scored in double-digits and nine players total got on the score sheet as host Stevenson pulled away from Cairn in the second half for a 68-56 home win, Tuesday night at Owings Mills Gymnasium.

Stevenson is now 2-0 for the third straight season and has now won all ten matchups with Cairn.  The Highlanders fall to 0-1 with the season-opening loss.

The Mustangs allowed Cairn to shoot 50% for the game, but caused 21 turnovers and also blocked four shots to outscore the Highlanders by six in each half.  Junior Sean Farr scored 13 points and sophomore Darius Walker netted 12 to join Roberts in double figures, while the Highlanders' JD Zamroz led all scorers with 21 points and teammate Reuben Lacy scored 20 points.

The game took on a frenetic pace from the start as the two teams went back-and-forth.  After Stevenson grabbed the initial lead on a steal and fast-break lay-in by Roberts, Cairn answered with five straight points for an early 5-2 lead.  The advantage was short-lived, however, as the Mustangs ran off a 10-0 run to build a seven-point cushion at 12-5.

The pendulum then swung back the other way as the visitors reclaimed the lead with an 8-0 run, punctuated by a steal and fast-break lay-up, and followed by a corner three by Zamroz.  Roberts ended the stretch and pulled the Mustang back with a three-pointer from the near corner by Roberts off of an assist by senior Colby Giacubeno.  The veteran guard then put the hosts up by three himself with a long-range basket from the wing as the shot clock expired.

The teams traded punches for the remainder of the half.  Stevenson hit first as Walker threw down an alley-oop off a pass from Giacubeno, but the Highlanders pegged back just seconds later as Lacy hit a fall-away three-pointer for a 24-22 Highlander lead.

Stevenson was able to take advantage of Cairn turnovers late in the half, though, and used a 13-3 run to close the half and go into the break leading, 33-27.

Out of the break, Zamroz continued his hot shooting and got the Highlanders back to within four at 37-33 with a layup and three-pointer from the right wing, but the run did not last long.  Farr finished at the basket on the next trip down the court for the Mustangs and then sophomore Ryan Hill re-instated SU's seven-point lead with a layup.  Walker assisted on both baskets and dished out seven assists in the game.

Stevenson continued to hold off each of the Cairn pushes, thwarting multiple runs with big baskets.  The visitors cut the lead to five at 50-45, but a corner three from Giacubeno to put SU back up 53-45 with 10:01 remaining.  The lead grew back to eight with just under six minutes to play and Farr pushed it into double digits by rising above the crowd to slam home a put-back dunk.  The junior finished with 13 points and has scored in double figures in each of his first two games at Stevenson.

Down the stretch the Mustangs slowly pulled away from the Highlanders, building a game-high 15 point lead with just under a minute remaining as Farr hit a three.  Previously, the Stevenson defense held Cairn without a basket for almost four minutes until Omar Askia hit a jumper with just 1:34 remaining.  After the three-pointer the visitors got a free throw and jumper from Lacy to cut the SU lead to 12 for the final margin.

The Mustangs are back in action this weekend with a pair of games during the third annual Hoopsville National Invitational Classic at Owings Mills Gymnasium.  Stevenson will first host Wittenberg on Friday evening as the nightcap to a triple header with tip-off slated for 8:00 p.m.  SU is then back in action on Sunday afternoon when the squad hosts Chicago.
