Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson men's volleyball senior Austin Jacoby had a team-high six kills, posting the 1,000th of his career in the first set to lead the 11th-ranked Mustangs to a 25-17, 25-13, 25-19 victory over Lancaster Bible Thursday night at Owings Mills Gymnasium in their season-opener.
Stevenson (1-0) is now 5-2 in season openers since 2008, including 4-0 versus Lancaster Bible.
Jacoby totaled three of his six kills in the first set with his second giving the Mustangs a 16-7 lead and marking the 1,000th of his career. He is just the second player in school history to total 1,000 career kills, joining J.R. Jackson '09 who totaled a school record 1,511 from 2006-09.
Jacoby added six digs and three service aces to go along with his six kills.
As a team, Stevenson needed just 30 kills to post its 14th-straight victory against the Chargers. The Mustangs' last loss in the series came back on Feb. 7, 2007 at home, 3-2 (30-27, 28-30, 23-30, 30-17, 17-15).
A total of 11 players had at least one kill for Stevenson, including four each from senior Jon Martin and sophomore Patrick Schuyler. Martin also added a match-high eight digs and three service aces.
Senior Adam Thatcher also had eight digs and now has 971 in his career as he looks to become the first player in school history to reach 1,000.
The Mustangs posted a .210 hitting percentage compared to .000 for Lancaster Bible who totaled 22 kills and 22 errors. Stevenson also had 14 block assists, including two from senior Eddy Klepper who now has 312 total blocks for his career, leaving him one shy of the school record held by Ryan McDowell '09.
Sophomore Kyle Pottieger had a strong all-around performance with two kills, two service aces, two digs and three block assists. Junior David Moler totaled 26 assists.
The Chargers (0-3) were led by Ken Diller who had 11 kills and six digs while posting a .348 hitting percentage. Tyler Eckels had 18 assists and six digs.
Stevenson travels to Ramapo this weekend for the Roadrunner Invitational. The Mustangs open against the host Roadrunners at 4:00 p.m., before taking on Brooklyn College at 6:00 p.m.
