Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Led by 23 points and 16 rebounds by junior Justin Kuntz, the Stevenson men's basketball team posted a thrilling 103-99 double overtime victory over No. 15 and undefeated Messiah in a Commonwealth Conference contest Wednesday at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
The Mustangs (11-3, 6-1 MAC), who won their second double overtime game this season, move into a first place tie with the Falcons in the conference standings. It was also their second win over a nationally ranked team as they defeated then No. 18 Middlebury, 80-69 on Nov. 22.
Freshman Darius Walker scored a layup to put Stevenson up 80-77 with 1:22 remaining in regulation before Taylor Groff hit a game-tying three pointer with 26 seconds left.
A three pointer by junior Colby Giacubeno with four seconds remaining bounced off the rim to force overtime.
In the first overtime, Brad Bolen went coast to coast for a fastbreak layup to give the Falcons (12-1, 6-1 MAC) a three-point lead with 2:15 left.
Trailing by two, Christian Roberts tied the game 89 with 23 seconds left giving Messiah a chance to hold for the last shot.
After a timeout, Bolen had a wide open chance to give the Falcons the win, but his layup rolled out forcing the second overtime.
Two made free throws by Groff cut the Mustangs lead to just one with six seconds remaining. Sophomore Erik Fisher connected on one-of-two free throws to push the lead to two.
Messiah's full court pass with four seconds remaining was intercepted by Kuntz to seal the win.
Stevenson made seven of eight free throw attempts in the final minute of double overtime.
The game featured 23 ties and 14 lead changes as neither team led by more than six.
The teams 103 points mark the third time this season they have scored at least 100. It is also the fourth time that they have had at least five players in double figures.
Kuntz posted his fifth double double this season while adding three blocks, three steals and one assist.
Fisher totaled 23 points while senior Alfonzo Hawkins had 18. Roberts and Walker combined for 23.
The Falcons were led by David Fernandez who had a game-high 27 points. Bolen also finished with 23 points and eight rebounds.
Stevenson returns to action on Sunday, January 19 when they travel to face Lycoming in a Commonwealth Conference contest beginning at 3:00 p.m. Last season the Mustangs and Warriors split their two games, each winning on the road.
