No. 22 Mustangs Tie School Record for Best Start to a Season, Down Messiah, 3-1

Box Score

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Led by 17 kills and 16 digs from senior Christine Isenberg (Taneytown, Md./Francis Scott Key) and 13 kills and 15 digs from sophomore Imani Hudson (Burke, Va./Lake Braddock), the Stevenson women's volleyball team remained unbeaten this season, posting its 15th-straight win with an 18-25, 25-21, 25-16, 25-22 decision over Messiah Wednesday at Owings Mills Gymnasium.

The Mustangs (15-0, 3-0 MAC), ranked at No. 22 in this week's AVCA Division III Coaches' Poll, tied the school record for best start to a season in school history. The 2008 team also won 15 consecutive to start the season before losing to Colby-Sawyer on Sept. 21, 2008.

The school record for longest win streak is 22, also set in 2008.

Messiah (4-5, 1-2 MAC), who has appeared to the last two Commonwealth Conference championship games, looked impressive in winning the first set, posting a .333 hitting percentage compared to a .111 percentage for Stevenson.

Kristen Douglas totaled seven of her team-high 16 kills in the opening set as the Falcons became the first team to take a set from the Mustangs in conference play since Sept. 20, 2012, snapping a stretch of 23-straight sets. Ironically, Messiah was the last team to do it when the team won the second set in its match-up with Stevenson a year ago at home, 25-23.

The first set featured 10 ties and three lead changes before Stevenson asserted itself over the final three which saw just nine ties and five lead changes.

Neither team had a stellar night offensively as the two combined to hit just .117 with 51 attack errors. Five players had at least 43 attempts, led by Isenberg who had 49, the fifth-most of her career and the most by a Mustang since Avery Gabbard '13 had 50 vs. DeSales on Sept. 2, 2012.

Freshman Kristen Brooks (Wilmington, Del./Concord) had nine kills and eight digs while junior Megan Miller (Wilmington, Del./St. Georges Tech) added eight kills and two blocks. Senior Jessica Gieselman (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill), two-time reigning Commonwealth Conference Player of the Week, had four kills, 44 assists, 12 digs and two blocks.

Junior Samantha Perillo (Wilmington, Del./Wilmington Friends) had 23 digs, totaling 20 or more for the sixth time this season.

Douuglas led Messiah with 16 kills, 15 digs and four blocks while Alyssa Vorbeck had eight kills and four blocks. Jessica Geib added three kills, 33 assists and 13 digs.

Stevenson hosts a tri-match with Shenandoah and Susquehanna this Saturday at Owings Mills Gymnasium beginning at 10:00 a.m.
