Mustangs Headed Back to National Semifinals, Down No. 13 Lynchburg, 13-7

Box Score

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - For the fourth time in the last five years, the Stevenson men's lacrosse team has advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Championship as the fourth-ranked Mustangs got four points from senior Peter Green (Hereford, Md./Hereford) en route to a 13-7 victory over No. 13 Lynchburg Wednesday night at Mustang Stadium.

With the win, Stevenson (20-2) also set a new school record for wins in a season, becoming the first team in the 19-year history of the program to win 20 games.

A total of 1,276 fans watched tonight's game, the second-largest lacrosse crowd in the history of Mustang Stadium. The record is 2,184 set on Apr. 14, 2012 when the Mustangs fell to rival Salisbury, 11-10.

Six different Mustangs scored as they built a 6-1 lead over the game's first 16:54 with Green contributing a goal and one assist.

The Hornets (14-6) answered with a quick 3-0 spurt in a span of 4:11 to cut their deficit to just two at 6-4 with 6:34 remaining in the second quarter. However, that was as close as Lynchburg would get as Stevenson's leading goal scorer, sophomore Mark Pannenton (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna), scored two goals in the final 39 seconds to give the Mustangs an 8-4 halftime advantage.

Following the break, Stevenson scored five of the first six goals in the second half to take its largest lead of the night at eight, 13-5 with 7:59 left in the fourth quarter, the last of which was a 30-second goal by sophomore Billy Burgoyne (Boonton Township, N.J./Mountain Lakes).

Pannenton finished the game with three goals and now has 56 on the year, moving him into fifth place on the school's single-season list. Neal Barthelme set the record with 73 in 2011, the same year Jimmy Dailey had 60 to rank second on that list.

Meanwhile, junior Chris Dashiell (Salisbury, Md./Parkside) had one assist, raising his season total to 53 which is third for a single-season at Stevenson. He also scored his 82nd point, moving him into ninth in school history.

Freshman Dimitri Pecunes (Lutherville, Md./Calvert Hall) totaled 12 saves, including eight in the second half. The Mustangs won 16-of-22 faceoffs with sophomore Sam Wyatt (Brentwood, Tenn./Human Services) going 9-for-12 and junior Brent Hiken (Pikesville, Md./Pikesville) winning 7-of-10.

Max Voumard scored four of Lynchburg's seven goals while Adam Davey made 16 saves, nine of which came in the second half.

Stevenson, who is now 11-4 in five NCAA tournament appearances, hosts rival Salisbury in the semifinals of the 2013 NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Championship on Sunday at 7:00 p.m. The Mustangs will be looking for their first win in four semifinal contests and first in three against the 12th-ranked Sea Gulls.
